  1. Bell Ringer • What would happen to the slug if all the leaves were removed? Why? 2. What would happen to the frogs if the Herons were removed? Why?

  2. Bell Ringer • What would happen to the slug if all the leaves were removed? Why? Slug population would decrease. 2. What would happen to the frogs if the Herons were removed? Why?

  3. Bell Ringer • What would happen to the slug if all the leaves were removed? Why? Slug population would decrease. 2. What would happen to the frogs if the Herons were removed? Why? Frog population would increase because they would no longer be eaten by the herons.

  6. Let’s back track for a minute! How do we draw food chains? Bring out a piece of paper.

  7. Please write a food chain including acorns, a squirrel, and a hawk. • Please write a food chain including seaweed, a small fish, a big fish, and a shark. • Please write a food chain including weeds, a rabbit, and a fox. • Please write a food chain including a seal, a small fish, algae, and a shark. • Please write a food chain including an owl, seeds, a mouse, and mushrooms.

  8. BUT. The same is true the OTHER WAY… • If weather conditions are REALLY good in a particular ecosystem…there can be an increase in the amount of producers.

  9.  If we have (10)MORE producers…there is (11)MORE for our consumers to eat. If our consumers eat MORE…they can live longer AND have more offspring.

  10. ROAD check • What happens to the frogs if there are more leaves? • The slugs would die off because there are no more leaves. Less slugs mean less food for frogs. • Frog populations will decrease.

  11. ROAD check • What happens to insects if plants die out?? • The insect population would starve and decrease

  12. ROAD check • What happens to the mouse if owls die out?? • Mice population would increase because no more owls are hunting them down.

  13. ROAD check • What happens to the owl if insects die out? • Mice population would decrease so owl population would decrease too because there are no more mice to eat for the owls.

  14. ROAD check What happens to the hawks if the dandelions decrease? Hawk Sparrow Snail Dandelion

  15. ROAD check What happens to the hawks if the dandelions decrease?  Hawk population would decrease. Hawk Sparrow Snail Dandelion

  16. ROAD check What happens to the sparrows if the snails increase??  Sparrow population would increase because there is more food! Hawk Sparrow Snail Dandelion

  17. ROAD check What happens to the dandelions if the hawks decrease??  Sparrow population would increase to eat more snails so snail population would decrease. SO, dandelion population would increase! Hawk Sparrow Snail Dandelion

  18. ROAD check • What happens to the snails if the sparrow decreases?? • Snail populations would increase. Hawk Sparrow Snail Dandelion

  19. Independent Practice

  20. Create a Food Chain • Must have 4+ organisms • Add plants of various types. Label them producers • Add consumers showing links between producers. • Label all of the consumers (herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores) On the back of your picture, answer these 4 questions… • What would happen to your producer if your final consumer increased? • What would happen to your first consumer if your producers increased? • What would happen to your secondary consumer if your first consumer decreased? • What would happen to your secondary consumer if your first consumer increased??
