  9. 2012 Summer GatheringMonday July 9 – Opening • 1:00 PM -2:15 PM: Opening Plenary The opening plenary will focus on the overall impact of the first year of the President’s Interfaith Service Challenge, including speakers from the Obama administration as well as Year 1 campuses highlighting stories from their institutions. • 2:30 PM-3:45 PM: First Breakout, Advancing Interfaith Service Part I The bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act puts strong emphasis on targeting a core set of national issues and demonstrating results. Each of the issue areas has a defined goal that each school should have in mind when selecting which area of service they want to work in.  Each breakout session will include campuses speaking to how their institutions engaged the following issues:

  10. 2:30 PM-3:45 PM: First BreakoutAdvancing Interfaith Service Part I Disaster Services - Help prepare, respond, recover, and mitigate disasters and increase community resiliency. Economic Opportunity - Provide, support and/or facilitate access to services and resources that contribute to the improved economic well-being and security of economically disadvantaged people. Education - Provide, support and/or facilitate access to services and resources that contribute to improved educational outcomes for economically disadvantaged people, especially children. Environmental Stewardship - Provide services that contribute to increased energy and water efficiency, renewable energy use, or improving at-risk ecosystems, and support increased citizen behavioral change leading to increased efficiency, renewable energy use, and ecosystem improvements particularly for economically disadvantaged households and economically disadvantaged communities. CNCS Days of Service – Learn about how some campuses catalyzed their communities around national days of service and get more information on CNCS resources to support your campus’ national service days.

  11. 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM Second BreakoutAdvancing Interfaith Service Part II • Healthy Futures - Provide services that enable seniors to remain in their own homes with the same or improved quality of life for as long as possible; increase physical activity and improve nutrition in youth with the purpose of reducing childhood obesity; and improve access to primary and preventive health care. • Human Trafficking – Although not a Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act issue, a number of campuses selected to focus on the issue of human trafficking, the illegal trade of humans for a variety of purposes. • Veterans and Military Families – Positively impact the quality of life of veterans and improve military family strength. • CNCS Days of Service – Same as above. 5:30 PM Evening Reception – Blackburn Center

  12. 2012 Summer GatheringTuesday July 10 • 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM: Day 2 Opening Plenary • 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Advancing Interfaith Engagement, Part I • 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM: Advancing Interfaith Engagement, Part II These sessions focus particularly on best practices in advancing interfaith cooperation on campus as an institutional priority. Both breakout times will include the following sessions (repeated in the second time slot):

  13. 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM and 11:15 AM-12:15 PM: Advancing Interfaith Engagement • Interfaith Student Leadership Development:  Student leaders are critical to your institution’s success in carrying out the President’s Challenge.  Come hear from campuses that have used innovative and effective techniques to equip student leaders to lead the campus movement for interfaith cooperation. • Putting the “Interfaith” in “Interfaith Service”:  What are the best practices for incorporating the interfaith element into service initiatives?  This session will cover tried-and-true techniques as well as facilitate conversations to foster new ideas. • Institutional Sustainability and Evaluation:  How do you know when your interfaith service initiatives are successful?  Come learn about successful program evaluation strategies as well as discuss best practices in building long-term, sustainable programs.

  14. 2012 Summer GatheringJuly 10, Afternoon • 12:15 PM -1:45 PM: Lunch Lunch will be available for purchase in the Blackburn Center. To facilitate networking conversations, certain tables will be marked to address specific topics, such as Muslim-Jewish relations on campus, engaging evangelicals, addressing particular service issues, etc. • 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM: Partner Resource Session These breakout sessions will include representatives from national religious, interfaith, and service organizations that exist to support your interfaith service efforts on campus.  Come get connected to existing networks and communities that can support your campus programs this year and into the future.  • 3:30 PM -4:30 PM: Closing Plenary Closing session will include a celebration of the new campuses joining for the second year of the President’s Challenge and a send-off for all participants.
