High School Credit + College Credit AT THE SAME TIME What is Dual Credit? • Dual Credit is a form of concurrent enrollment that allows a high school student to take certain courses at San Jacinto College that earn both college and high school credit. • Courses are taught on the high school or college campus by SJC instructors. • Typically, students take two courses each semester as Juniors and Seniors. Additional classes can be taken with approval, but DPISD only pays for two per fall/spring term for Juniors and Seniors only. • Graduate from high school with 24+ hours of college credit! Earn even more by taking summer courses. DPISD does not pay for summer courses. • Grades posted on high school transcript and college transcript. • Must earn a “70” or better to receive HS credit and remain in the program.

5. Resources & Perks for SJC Dual Credit Students Dual credit students are official college students with access to the full range of services offered by San Jacinto College.

6. Who is Eligible for Dual Credit? To participate in the Dual Credit program, you must: • Be a current high school student in grades 9-12 (public, private, or home school) seeking to get a jump start on your college coursework • Have approval from your high school counselor or dual credit designee • Apply & meet the college’s requirements for admission • Satisfy the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements • Be academically motivated • Have good time management skills

7. Is Dual Credit the Right Choice for Me? Expectations for College • Students who take dual credit courses are beginning their college career. • This is a serious commitment and should only be entered into by those who are ready to be committed to college-level work. • Dual Credit students will be academically challenged in a college setting. Courses are rigorous. • Students and parents should discuss the level of commitment needed in regards to their high school course load and extra-curricular activities. • Must exhibit maturity and social behavior necessary to be enrolled in a college level course. • Remember!! Dual credit classes become part of your permanent college transcript and can affect eligibility for financial aid and scholarships!

8. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) • Federal law that ensures privacy of student educational records (begins when student starts college regardless of age). • San Jacinto College cannot share grades, course schedules, test scores, etc. with parents or anyone other than the student. • Students’ opportunity to gain new responsibilities and act on his/her own behalf. • There are options for students to share information with parents. • A student may log in to their student account at any time to show the parent information through SOS & Blackboard. • View an unofficial transcript • Order official transcripts for college/university applications • Pay tuition and fees • Print a degree evaluation • Check class schedule and final grades

9. Academic Freedom & the College Environment Academic Freedom allows faculty and students to pursue whatever inquiry they feel is important and to speak about it in the classroom without fear of censorship. • Understand that within a college environment, students may encounter adult language and images, and different philosophical viewpoints and belief systems. • Understand that appropriate and essential discipline specific terminology, concepts, and principles are utilized as needed in the classroom setting. • Understand that you will encounter various teaching styles and course delivery methods.

10. Student Rights & Responsibility Code of Student Conduct • Students are held accountable to the policies, rules, and regulations of San Jacinto College. For more information, see Student Handbook. • Disruptive behavior in class • Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism) SJC Academic Calendar • Dual Credit students are college students and must follow the San Jacinto College calendar. • You are required to attend your college class even if it is a high school holiday. (Ex: SJC is only closed Wed-Fri of Thanksgiving week). • Attendance policies vary by professor. Please inform your instructor well in advance if you need to miss a class. 11. Types of Dual Credit • Academic (Core Curriculum) • Typically transfers to four-year colleges and universities. • Students taking these courses often plan to pursue a four-year degree after high school graduation. • Workforce (Career & Technical) • May or may not transfer to four-year colleges and universities. • Students taking these courses often plan to enroll in a certificate or two-year degree program. • Courses taken as high school electives can help students become employable after high school graduation. Students can choose to take a combination of academic and technical courses.

13. Traditional Course Sequence • Meet with your High School Dual Credit Counselor to verify your registration needs. • Students typically take the year-long sequence listed above and then pair another course each semester from the list below. Additional courses may be approved by the HS. DPISD will pay for up to two courses per semester for Juniors and Seniors. • Students can also come during the summer to gain additional coursework. DPISD does not pay for summer courses. • Juniors can select from: • BCIS 1305 • EDUC/PSYC 1300 • HIST 1301 & 1302 • HUMA 1301 • PSYC 2301* • SOCI 1301* • SPCH 1315 or 1318 • Seniors can select from: • BCIS 1305 • ECON 2301* • EDUC/PSYC 1300 • ENGL 1301 & 1302 • GOVT 2305 • HUMA 1301 • MATH (college credit only) • PSYC 2301* • SOCI 1301* • SPCH 1315 or 1318 *ECON 2301, PSYC 2301, & SOCI 1301 fulfill the same core area. It is recommended that students choose only one. Business majors will need ECON 2301.

14. Course Days/Times • At the High School -- NEW for Fall 2017! • Select courses will be offered at the high school on a first-come, first-served basis. Listen for an announcement to be made about the sign-up process. • At SJC Central Campus • Courses meet for three hours one evening per week per course. • Please indicate your preferred class night(s) on your enrollment form. Keep in mind the activities that you will be involved in for both fall and spring. (Specific nights cannot be guaranteed.) • Schedules for Career and Technical courses vary. They are usually in the afternoon/evening at SJC. See Ms. Weaver for details.

15. Admissions & Registration requirements Returning students do not need to re-apply, re-test, or re-submit meningitis documentation, but must complete a new Enrollment Form/HS Contract (step #4).

16. STEP #1 Complete the FREE Texas Common Application at www.applytexas.org. This must be completed before anything else can occur with your record at SJC. Remember to complete the profile and the application. Watch for an email from SJC. It should come 2-3 days after submitting the application and will include your G#. If you do not receive an email from SJC, go back to Apply Texas and make sure you submitted the application. Carefully enter your email address so that you will receive important updates about your status. Apply Online TODAY!

Helpful Tips Questions on the Application: • Application = 2 year college admission application • College = San Jacinto Community College • Will you be taking courses prior to HS graduation? = YES • Semester of Entry = Summer or Fall 2017 • Major Code = Enter your 1st and 2nd choice (Most dual credit students select General Studies AA) High School = Deer Park High School • Grade Level = Your grade level for next school year • Basis you are seeking admissions = Dual Credit • Primary reason for attending = Earn credits for transfer or 2 year degree • CitizenorPermanentResident (not both). • Some students may be asked to submit additional residency information. 18. STEP #2 Texas Success Initiative (TSI) The TSI is designed to measure competency in reading, writing, and mathematics. It is used for placement purposes. Students must place at college level in reading and writing for the majority of courses. See the college catalog for placement and prerequisite information.

19. TSI Exemptions & Waivers • All scores must be official from testing company or sent from the HS. • Partial exemptions are available and scores from multiple tests can be used as long as composite/combined scores are met.

20. TSI: What will I need to do? • All current Juniors will be taking the TSI at DPHS in the first week of February. • All other students who are not exempt or waived, will need to complete the TSI at DPHS on 2/22& 2/23, 3/1 & 3/2, or 3/8 & 3/9. • First, complete the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) online at: www.sanjac.edu/testing-PAA • Print your PAA confirmation and bring it to the Deer Park HS Counseling Office to sign up for a time to test at DPHS. • If you are unable to test at DPHS, you may test at SJC. Visit the Dual Credit Office with a photo ID to get a Testing Request Form. • If you have a partial exemption or need to re-test, you will need to test at SJC. • The TSI is free for Dual Credit students.

21. STEP #3 Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination The vaccination or booster must not be more than 5 years old as of the first day of the term in which you plan to enroll. Documentation can be: • emailed to meningitis.docs@sjcd.edu • faxed to 281-669-4720 • dropped off at the SJC Admissions/Enrollment Services or Dual Credit Office The HS nurse may be able to provide your record to you. This is an admissions requirement for SJC and must be completed before registration can occur. Please submit by April 7th. If your doctor will not allow the shot because it is not yet time for the booster, you may request a temporary waiver with a signed physician statement. Please see www.sanjac.edu/meningitis for more information. Texas Legislature requires all students under the age of 22 entering a higher education institution to provide proof of having the vaccine or document an exemption or waiver.

22. STEP #4 Enrollment Form & HS Contract After you have tested, you can pick up an Enrollment Form/HS Contract from the DPHS Counseling Office. List your courses and preferred day(s) on the form. Also indicate if you are requesting courses at the HS or if you are in Athletics or Band. Enrollment form must be signed by • High School Dual Credit Counselor • Student • Parent or Guardian Turn the signed form (front & back) into your high school dual credit counselor by April 7th. Your high school will provide the forms in bulk to the SJC Dual Credit Office.

23. STEP #5 Registration All Dual Credit registration is performed by the Dual Credit Office. Dual Credit students do not have access to web registrationand cannot select professors. You will be registered based on the courses and preferred days listed on your enrollment form once you have completed steps 1-4. We cannot guarantee your preferred days. Please review your schedule through the student portal, SOS, in late May/early June. Requests for schedule adjustments must be emailed to the Dual Credit Office by the high school dual credit counselor or designee. An extenuating circumstance must exist. If you need to drop a course, please inform your high school dual credit counselor and visit the Dual Credit Office in person to complete a drop form.

24. STEP #6 Tuition Deer Park will pay for two courses each fall and spring. You will be responsible for tuition for a third course, or for courses taken over the summer or as early admission (college credit only). Ways to Pay • Pay the full remaining balance online through SOS or in person at the Business Office • Installment Payment Plan ($25 service fee) • Financial Aid –Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) for Dual Credit Students

25. STEP #7 Buy or Rent your Course Textbooks Dual Credit students, like all college students, are responsible for purchasing the required textbooks and other essential course materials. Deer Park ISD does not purchase your books. Textbooks may be purchased at the SJC Central Campus Bookstore in the Student Center Building #14. STEP #8 Prepare for Classes • Claim your Student Accounts • SOS • Email • Blackboard • College Photo ID Card – Take a copy of your schedule to the Admissions Office • Parking Permit – Take a copy of your schedule to the Business Office • Sign up for SJC Alert Me –emergency notifications • Get to campus early to find your classrooms • Be on time for classes Preparing for Your First Day at San Jacinto College

29. If you are currently taking a Dual Credit course, you do not have to reapply. You will come to the counseling office to pick up an enrollment form. After you select your class and day, bring the signed form back to the counseling office. San Jac will schedule your class and it will be posted on your SOS. You do not have to retake the TSI or resubmit immunization records.

31. Remember that the TSI assesses College Ready skills and contains upper level material. 9th grade students may not have taken enough coursework to be able to achieve college readiness on the TSI. • If you are currently a 9th grade student and you would like to take a Dual Credit class next year, you’ll need to take the TSI at South campus on 2/22, 3/1, or 3/8 from 3 -7 pm. Please contact Mrs. Keller in the South counseling office to select a day. • 832-668-7209 or skeller@dpisd.org • You must enroll at San Jac through ApplyTexas.org and complete the Pre Assessment Activity before you can schedule a day for the TSI. You will need to bring a copy of your PAA confirmation page to the South counseling office on your test day.

32. When you meet with your counselor to select courses for next year, be sure to enter your Dual Credit class by selecting the course that says Dual Credit. You are eligible for an off period for each Dual Credit class. Be sure to enter your off period by selecting DC – Off. • If you have already entered your courses for next year, don’t worry you will have an opportunity to enter the DC course.
