What is Theology of the Body? The Theology Of The Body is the title JPII gave 129 short talks he delivered b/w 1979 and 1984. It is a biblical reflection on the meaning of the body, sex, love, and what it means to be created as a male and female. It has shed light on the mystery of our bodies and sex. TOTB is an integrated vision of the human person; body soul, and spirit. It explores who man was in the beginning, before sin, (original man), who he is now, after the fall (Historical man), and who he will be in ages to come (the resurrection of the body AKA eschatological man). Pope John Paul II explains human sexuality, and spends time explaining issues such as contraception and abortion. He believes that every human life has meaning. Why a Theology of the Body? SEXUALITY “At its core, sexual morality is about expressingthrough our bodies. This is why John Paul II can say that ‘if we live according to the truth of our sexuality, we fulfill the very meaning of our bodies and existence.’” We study TOB to make sense of our world, because right now we live in a culture of death that distorts the beauty of our creation and we can only begin to live in a culture of life if we know what that potential is supposed to look like and our bodies are a map, a sign, a blueprint to fulfillment. It becomes a theology, (study of God), because the body makes God visible Genesis 1:17 The TOB teaches us that God is telling us everything we want to know about who He is, how we are to live, who we are, the , the reason He created us and even our is contained in the truth of our sexualities, written in our bodies.

Made in the Image of God The Creation story in Genesis is absolute key to understanding TOB. It explains how in the beginning things were different than they are now. Mathew 19:4-5, 8 “…from the beginning it was not so.” If we are made in the image and likeness of God who is love, then above all else we are called to love. Also, God in His essence is a Trinity, a life giving communion of persons. “God has revealed his innermost secret: “ God himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and he has destined us to share in that exchange.” CCC 2331 In a special way the complimentarily of sexes images God. To understand how we resemble God, it helps to know who God is. “Whoever is without love does not know God for God is Love.” 1John 4:8. Our Bodies Reveal God! There are so many false teachings in our world today! How many of you grew up thinking: “spirit = good, body = bad”?? So many people think this very thing. The fact that we have bodies is an important gift from God (our bodies ARE NOT bad)…let us not forget how the Incarnate Word became flesh. Christianity (Catholicism) is not a religion which says that the body is bad, but one that says “the body is so good that you can’t even fathom it” It’s a common misunderstanding. “The body is so good that you can’t even fathom it!!” John Paul II says that God created the body as a “sign” of his own divine mystery. For instance we have the mystery of the Trinity. The ‘Mystery’ we are talking about doesn’t mean some unsolvable puzzle, but rather the innermost reality of God and his eternal plan for humanity which is so far beyond anything we can comprehend that we call it a ‘mystery.’ The amazing thing is that Yet God is “knowable”—not because we can figure him out – but because God has made himself known. Centrality of Sexuality in God’s Plan Check this out: The Bible from Beginning (Genesis 2:24), middle (Song of Songs/ Eph 5:31), to end (Rev. 19:7, 9) is a story about marriage. God’s ultimate plan is to “marry us” in total communion with God (eternal life with him)! Romans 6:5, Eph. 1:10. God wants to reveal His plan to us in a way that we could not miss, so He stamped it in our very being and existence; the sign is in our BODIES!! Genesis 1:27 SCRIPTURE Ephesians 5: 22-30: “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. To further understand what God is doing here, you must understand the Sacramentality of the Body. The Sacramentality of the Body requires us to understand our bodies in its creation; for the Body makes visible what is invisible. Now lets remember that the Greatest Sacrament is Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. This shows how we partake in the sacrament of Jesus!

Pope John Paul II - Biography EARLY YEARS Pope John Paul II was born Karol JózefWojtyla on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was no stranger to tragedy. His mother died when he was nine and his older brother Edmund died when he was twelve. After his mother died JP2 went to a shrine and he said to the Blessed Mother, “You must be my mother now.” He carried this into his priesthood as well as his papacy, showing others they must also say, “TotusTuus Maria” or “I Am Totally Yours Mary!” Growing up, John Paul was athletic and enjoyed skiing and swimming as well as showed interest in theater and poetry. He was a very versatile and talented man, and he wanted to become a priest. John Paul began studying at a secret seminary run by the archbishop of Krakow and was ordained in 1946. John Paul spent two years in Rome where he finished his doctorate in theology. BECOMING POPE John Paul became the bishop of Ombi in 1958 and then the archbishop of Krakow six years later. Considered one of the Catholic Church's leading thinkers, he participated in the Second Vatican Council—sometimes called Vatican II. As a member of the council, John Paul helped the church to examine its position in the world. Well regarded for his contributions to the church, John Paul was made a cardinal in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. In 1978, John Paul made history by becoming the first non-Italian pope (He is Polish!) in more than four hundred years. As the leader of the Catholic Church, he traveled the world, visiting more than 100 countries to spread his message of faith and peace. But he was close to home when he faced the greatest threat to his life. In 1981, an assassin shot John Paul twice in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Fortunately, he was able to recover from his injuries and later forgave his attacker. LIFE AND DEATH John Paul did much in his time as Pope. A vocal advocate for human rights, John Paul often spoke out about suffering in the world. He held strong positions on many topics, including his opposition to capital punishment. A charismatic figure, John Paul used his influence to bring about political change and is credited with the fall of communism in his native Poland. He was not without critics, however. Some have stated that he could be harsh with those who disagreed with him and that he would not compromise his hard-line stance on certain issues, such as contraception. In his later years, John Paul's health appeared to be failing. John Paul had Parkinson's disease, a brain disorder often characterized by shaking, which was diagnosed in 2001. John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at his Vatican City residence. More than three million people waited in line to say good-bye to their beloved religious leader at St. Peter's Basilica before his funeral on April 8. In The Beginning “LOVE IS, THEREFORE, MAN’S ORIGIN, END, AND VOCATION” This is taken from Pope John Paul’s Sept. 5th 1979 general audience. In summary this audience focuses on how man and woman were in perfect unity “in the beginning.” God’s plan for man and woman being together was not an accident, he made us for each other. At first however Adam was the only human in the garden of Eden. Adam was alone and there was “no helper suitable for him” (Gen 2:20). Adam felt a longing to have someone to love, and so God gave him a helper. When Adam awakens, Eve is there, and Adam exclaims “At last this one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh!” (Gen 2:23). At last Adam had someone to love! Scripture: Genesis 2:22-25: “And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman: and brought her to Adam. And Adam said: This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man. Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh. And they were both naked: to wit, Adam and his wife: and were not ashamed. Man and Woman: A Mutual Gift for Each Other This is taken from Pope John Paul’s Feb 6th General Audience. According to Genesis 2:25, “The man and his wife were not ashamed.” We can conclude from this that the exchange of the gift, in which the whole of their humanity participated, body and soul, femininity and masculinity, was actualized by preserving the interior characteristic (innocence) of the donation of oneself and of the acceptance of the other as a gift. These two functions of the mutual exchange are deeply connected in the whole process of the gift of oneself. There is a dignity and respect formed through giving of ourselves as a gift, and with innocence at the heart of our giving, God’s will is enacted. The opposite of giving ourselves as gifts, then becomes a using of the other as “an object for myself” such as for lust, pornography, misappropriation, ext. She is only able to rediscover herself though, when she is accepted in the way the Creator wants her to be. The man needs to receive her as a gift in the full truth of her person and femininity, and the miracle is at the very same time, he is enriched. The woman has been entrusted to the man from the beginning, to his eyes, his consciousness, his sensitivity, and his heart.
