  1. Mini-Quiz Review Overview of the 3 types of cell division

  2. There are 3 types of cell division: • Binary Fission- Prokaryotic cell division. One bacterium splits into two. NO NUCLEUS • Mitotic Cell Cycle- Eukaryotic Cell division. One cell with one nucleus divides into 2 identical cells each with a nucleus. • Meiotic Cell Cycle- Eukaryotic Cell Division. One cell with one nucleus divides into 4 different/distinct cells each with a nucleus containing half the genetic information.

  3. Mitotic Cell Cycle vs Meiotic Cell CycleMitosis vs. Meiosis Occurs in Mitosis- My toes and all body cells (including reproductive organs) Meiosis- My o’s (ovaries) or testes (reproductive organs- gonads)

  4. Mitosis vs. Meiosis Number of cells produced per parent cell Mitosis- TWO Meiosis- FOUR (in Females only 1 of 4 will be a viable/usable egg, in Males all 4 will be viable sperm)

  5. Mitosis vs. Meiosis Chromosome Number of Parent Cell Mitosis- Diploid (Regular Body Cell #) Meiosis- Diploid (Regular Body Cell #)

  6. Mitosis vs. Meiosis Chromosome Number of Daughter Cells Mitosis- Diploid (Regular Body Cell #) Meiosis- Haploid (Half the Body Cell #)

  7. Mitosis vs. Meiosis Kind of cell produced Mitosis- Somatic Cells (Body Cells) Meiosis- Gametes (Sex Cells- Sperm and Egg)

  8. Mitosis vs. Meiosis Function Mitosis- Growth and replacement of Cells Meiosis- Sexual Reproduction; Promotes Variation in Offspring

  9. Quiz Wiz 1. How do prokaryotes divide?

  10. 2. How do eukaryotes divide?

  11. 3. How many cells are there at the end of binary fission?

  12. 4. How many cells are there at the end of mitotic cell cycle (MITOSIS)?

  13. 5. How many cells are there at the end of meiotic cell cycle (MEIOSIS)?

  14. 6. Are the daughter cells identical or different from the parent cell at the end of binary fission?

  15. 7. Are the daughter cells identical or different from the parent cell at the end of meiotic cell cycle (MEIOSIS)?

  16. 8. Are the daughter cells identical or different from the parent cell at the end of mitotic cell cycle (MITOSIS)?

  17. 9. Are somatic cells formed by mitosis or meiosis?

  18. 10. Are gametes formed by mitosis or meiosis?

  19. Houseflies have 6 chromosomes in their sperm. What is the haploid number? What is the diploid number?

  20. Bats have 44 chromosomes in body cells. What is the haploid number? What is the diploid number?

  21. 13. Humans have 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes in body cells. What is the haploid number? What is the diploid number?

  22. 14. A fruit fly has 8 chromosomes in a body cell. How many chromosomes will be in a somatic cell? How many chromosomes will be in a gamete?

  23. Quiz Wiz - ANSWERS • How do prokaryotes divide? BINARY FISSION

  24. How do eukaryotes divide? MITOTIC CELL CYCLE (MITOSIS) and MEIOTIC CELL CYCLE (MEIOSIS)

  25. How many cells are there at the end of binary fission? 2 IDENTICAL CELLS

  26. How many cells are there at the end of mitotic cell cycle (MITOSIS)? 2 IDENTICAL CELLS

  27. How many cells are there at the end of meiotic cell cycle (MEIOSIS)? 4 DISTINCT/DIFFERENT CELLS

  28. Are the daughter cells identical or different from the parent cell at the end of binary fission? IDENTICAL

  29. Are the daughter cells identical or different from the parent cells at the end of meiotic cell cycle (MEIOSIS)? DIFFERENT/DISTINCT

  30. Are the daughter cells identical or different from the parent cells at the end of mitotic cell cycle (MITOSIS)? IDENTICAL

  31. Are somatic cells formed by mitosis or meiosis? MITOSIS

  32. Are gametes formed by mitosis or meiosis? MEIOSIS

  33. Houseflies have 6 chromosomes in their sperm. What is the haploid number? What is the diploid number? HAPLOID NUMBER – 6 (haploid number is half of regular number- what you find in gametes) DIPLOID NUMBER- 12

  34. Bats have 44 chromosomes in body cells. What is the haploid number? What is the diploid number? HAPLOID NUMBER- 22 (half the number of body cells- this is the number you would find in sperm) DIPLOID NUMBER- 44

  35. Humans have 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes in body cells. What is the haploid number? What is the diploid number? (notice it says 23 pairs- meaning 23 X 2 in body cells) HAPLOID NUMBER- 23 DIPLOID NUMBER- 46

  36. A fruit fly has 8 chromosomes in a body cell. How many chromosomes will be in a somatic cell? How many chromosomes will be in a gamete? SOMATIC CELL is a Body CELL- 8 Gametes are sex cells- 4

  37. QUIZ WIZ- PART 2 1. A leopard frog has 26 chromosomes in a somatic cell. How many chromosomes in an egg? How many chromosomes in a sperm?

  38. 2. Monkeys have 21 chromosomes in a gamete. How many pairs of chromosomes does a monkey have in a body cell?

  39. 3. A chicken has 39 pairs of homologous chromosomes. How many chromosomes are in a body cell? How many chromosomes are in a somatic cell?

  40. 4. A king crab has 104 pairs of homologous chromosomes. How many chromosomes are in an egg? How many chromosomes are in a sperm?

  44. 8. Which type of cell division is used by eukaryotes strictly for sexual reproduction and helps give variation to offspring?

  45. 9. Which type of eukaryotic cell division makes 4 genetically different/distinct cells (only 1 will be viable for the female and all 4 will be viable for the male)?

  46. 10. Which type of eukaryotic cell division makes 2 genetically identical cells?

  47. 11. Which type of cell division will make somatic cells?
