Sharing Department SLO’s “A Student Learning Outcome is a specific statement indicating what students will know, do, or value.” • Each department will share the SLO they have drafted • The rest of the group will provide feedback with discussion for each SLO shared Keep in mind… SLO’s need to be clearly defined so that anyone who reads the statement know exactly what you mean.

  5. Department SLO’s Career Services Example: - Students demonstrate networking skills through participation in job fairs and networking events allowing them to interact with alumni and employers face-to-face.

Connecting to the Strategic Plan • All departments will identify at least one specific learning outcome for their areas from the following 6 learning domains: • knowledge acquisition, construction, integration, and application; • cognitive complexity; • intrapersonal development; • interpersonal competence; • humanitarianism and civic engagement; • practical competence. • Metric:Specific learning outcomes identified for each department. • Responsibility: Department Directors (with assistance from Division of Student Development facilitators and/or Faculty Consultant) • Timeline: May 2011

  7. Connecting to the Strategic Plan Career Services Example:

Data Collection • What do you want to measure? • What data do you need to collect to see if you are achieving your learning outcomes? • Qualitative/Quantitative • How can you collect that data? • Examples of tools and data sources: • Focus Groups • Surveys/Questionnaires • Student work: bulletin boards, portfolios, resumes

Data Collection Career Services Example: “Students demonstrate networking skills through participation in job fairs and networking events allowing them to interact with alumni and employers face-to-face.” • Wanted to know to what degree are our students demonstrating networking skills • Evaluated through use of rubric with direct observation, alumni feedback and student self-report
