Paragraph #1—The Introduction • Re-State the quote exactly as it is • Provide your interpretation of the quote (explain yourself—be thorough!) • Make sure your interpretation says what the quote MEANS. • Show agreement or disagreement (Avoid I and YOU) • Introduce the literary works that you’re writing about: • To Kill a Mockingbird • A Separate Peace

Introduction—Example Mortimer Adler once said, “The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, continue growing as we continue to live.” This quote means that even after physical growth has stopped, people will experience situations which will cause them to continue growing mentally. As people live, they acquire knowledge and understanding of things that were previously unknown to them or misunderstood by them. Two works of literature that support this idea are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and A Separate Peace by John Knowles. In both of these works, characters experience difficult situations that foster growth.

  7. Paragraph #5: Book #2—Example #2 A Separate Peace Discuss and develop one connection to the quote through another literary element or technique. Transition to your conclusion

  8. Paragraph #6: Conclusion Re-state your interpretation in a new way/use new words, etc… Give your “final argument” that both literary works support this idea. Re-state or show how your point was proven.
