  1. Act Local Project 2013Hicks Elementary By Ava Hampshire Mrs. Scott’s Class

  2. Ava’s Story Ava always ask Mommy and Daddy why we have to work, why we have to travel for business, and how we get money to buy her and her brother nice things? Tyler and I always try to teach her the value of money and the value of everything she has around her that makes her life so beautiful. Even down to the water she has to brush her teeth and take a shower, and how important it is to not waste this precious water. We talk about at dinner why it is so important to cherish every meal because so many in our world don’t get a meal or have a warm bed to sleep in at night. You can always see her little brain trying to understand the meaning of all this and how lucky she is to have all these things around her to keep her safe and well nourished. One day she and I were watching T.V. and an announcement came on about St. Jude and all these children that are in need of our help. She asked me, “Mommy why are these kids sick and why do they look so sad?” I explained to her that sometimes things happen to us that are out of our control but that she and I can help them. She said she wanted to draw them all a picture to make them happy and I said that would be wonderful. From that point on, we as a family, have donated to the St. Jude Foundation monthly which has now been almost a year. She also sends pictures to these kids occasionally in hopes that they will reach them and put a smile on their face. So, for this project when I asked her what she wanted to do she said lets give kids all my stuff that has piled up in the guest room closet. She also started pulling things from her own closet and drawers that she still uses/wears that another child would be able to use. It warmed my heart to see this child who will throw a temper tantrum about not getting a piece of candy or toy from the store have such a big heart. She was so excited to go through her things and justify why she didn’t need them anymore so that others could enjoy them as much as she has.
