  1. 2017 WA State SAR Take-Aways • Pre-Conference • Conference SCVSAR Participants: Nicole, Trinity, Joe, Angela SLIDE 1 Colin Tim Edwin

  2. Airscent Take-Aways • Train an indication that is not natural, if it's natural dog may tend to do it all the time. • Use water to your advantage when searching, as it carries scent. Also use it to create a visual of scent pictures. • Lots of discussion about thresholding. Learn to read your dog's subtle behavior. • Work a tired dog, so you learn to read their behavior when they are tired. • Crittering - what was your dog doing right before? learn to read that so you can intervene quickly. Recording helps with this. • Make sure you are training for articles as well. SLIDE 2

  3. Tracking/Trailing Take-Aways • Border Patrol’s first time working with K9 SAR • Border patrol’s training method is based on specific type of canine. • Reward from source, shape the behavior • Environment has a big effect on capabilities of the canine • Have solid foundation before moving onto next item. Don’t jump in training (reward system SLIDE 3

  4. Water Take-Aways • Working shoreline (be prepared to wade thigh high, source placed 2-4 feet deep) • Working streams (see how dog gets scent downstream and works up) • Working boat (gridding and directing pilot, using GPS) • Records (understand impact of currents, inlets/outlets, temperature of water) • Mock test – be assertive, clear and take charge, use GPS effectively: Alpha vs Astro) SLIDE 4

  5. Search Management Take-Aways • Search Management for the Initial Response Incident Commander (Smith, May 15-16) • Outlined the (6) step process for setting up IC • Identified search techniques, sources of information on subjects, searching public and private areas • Identified forms used to document information from a Law Enforcement perspective • Endangered and Vulnerable Adults and Children (Koester, May 17-18) • Outlined reflex tasks (using the Bike model) • Search urgency determination • Outlines subject behaviors SLIDE 5

  7. Main Conference Take-Aways • US Border Patrol Classroom Session • All border patrol dogs start with airscenting (killing a myth) • Using trail as scent article/scent pad (triangle) • “First time I tell you anything is black and white I am lying” – constantly modify individual dog • Be clear on training focus. Handler? Dog? What do you want to learn today? • Reward from source (subject) – pretend to pull from behind subject (does not have to mean subject is doing the actual rewarding) • Keep neat and meticulous records • Keep commands to minimum and praise short and sweet • Importance of ritual to get started • Fast dog, fast person • Ethics in Testing (Janet Yatchak) – interest in presentation to follow at future K9 meeting?: • Definition of “professional and ethics” • Roles of certifying org vs evaluators vs test candidates • Objective vs subjective criteria • Test Scenarios SLIDE 7

  8. Main Conference Take-Aways • General Takeaways • Share your training experiences both successes and failures. Everyone can learn from both. • Don’t keep personal training Objectives and styles secret. • We're all in this to help save lives why keep anything secret. Always give feedback positive and negative everyone sees things differently. • Scent Theory/JoMay and Roy Classroom Session • Everybody has a unique scent signature • Make sure nose is wet on hot days • Dogs go to edge to refresh • Sneezing/shakeoff when searching – blow off too much scent • Keep moving when dog gets stuck • Searching at night • search planning, POD's at night, where people tend to hunker down, etc. • HRD • imprinting on 4 HR types at the same time SLIDE 8
