  1. Romeo and Juliet Act I

  2. Scene Summaries I ii - Paris tries to convince Capulet about his “suit.” Capulet sends his guest list out with illiteracy problems. Benvolio wants Romeo to party away those Rosaline blues. I iii - A forgetful Lady Capulet embarrasses Juliet in front of her nurse. Lady Capulet is interested in Paris’ “suit” and asks Juliet to look upon him for the family. I iv - Montague boys plan to crash the Capulet party via masks and connections. Talk of bad dreams finishes in the discussion of omens and portents. I v - Capulet makes the rounds at the party while Romeo forgets Rosaline. An observant Tybalt has to “go to.” Romeo and Juliet finally meet; sonnets, sins, and kissing ensue. The scene closes with anguished identity revelations.

  3. Exit/Enter • What are some things that happen during the course of family arguments? • How do you feel about parental control in your life? Procedure: One reading of the scene will be performed seated Another will involve movement The third reading will combine context, movement, and reading. Context Lady Capulet does not want to have this conversation “Dug discussion” - Lady Capulet talking about nursing Juliet Lady Capulet was around Juliet’s age when she was married “To fall on one’s back” - Think dirty

  4. Queen Mab Starters: What do we associate with the term “mercury?” How do you feel about overly active or “flighty” people? Procedure Find Mercutio’s speech that begins with “O, then I see Queen Mab…” Act I iv Mark off every ten lines of the speech with a line through the text Sides of the room will alternate lines in reading Context - The young men are going to a party It is late at night The prior conversation is Romeo’s melancholy contrasted with Mercutio’s urge to have a good time.

  5. Go to… Starting out: • Who are the participants? • Where are they? Procedure: • Reading one is without movement/emotion • Reading two is with emotion • Reading three is with emotion and movement

  6. Sonnet, sins, and introductions Considerations: Review the lines between Romeo and Juliet’s introduction? Notice anything familiar? Be aware that “palmers” are religious pilgrims. How does the “sin” get transmitted between the two? Why does it matter?
