  16. Additional Updates ** What Indistar Indicators – aligned to the School Turnaround Principles – are Title I Priority and Focus Schools required to assess to access their funding? A: Schools are required to assess indicators NH101 and ID10 and determine at lease one intervention in each in order to access their funding. For a Title I Focus School, the deadline for submitting the initial school improvement plan is on October 15. Both Title I Priority and Focus Schools will be required to continue their Indistar self-assessment during the school year and can update their school improvement plans at any time.

  17. Additional Updates: ** SIG Priority Schools: What SIG requirements are still in place? Which no longer apply? For those that still apply, when will they be due? (e.g., Reports – Leading Indicators, Lagging Indicators, Annual Interventions) A: All SIG requirements are still in place for schools who receive Title I-A 1003(g) funds. The SIG schools are required to complete the Steps to Success crosswalk to access the additional award.

  19. Drawing Inferences from Data Rob Hanson Turnaround Coach and Data Coach

  20. Observations • Does each statement communicate a single idea about student performance? • Are statements short and clear? • Do the statements incorporate numbers? • Do the statements focus on just those direct and observable facts that are contained in the data, without interpretation or inference? • Do the statements use relevant data concepts, such as mean, median, mode, range, or distribution? Source: The Data Coach’s Guide to Improving Learning for All Students

  21. Observations – Rough vs. Refined Rough: There are more students proficient in math. Refined: 70% of 4th grade students are proficient in math on the fall 2012 NECAP.

  22. Observations Our 1st grade student scores have increased 30 percentile points as measured by AIMSweb in the last 3 years. Our 5th grade student scores have decreased by 7 percentile points as measured by AIMSweb in the last 3 years. We have a lot more student absences now. Student absentee rates have increased by 14% in the last 4 years. Our student retention was a high of 7 students in 2005 and has been at 0 for the last 3 years. Our retention rate is decreased a lot.

  23. Inferences & Questions • Inferences and Questions are developed from the observations. • This is where we can go back to our prior knowledge and assumptions. • We look for multiple possible explanations • To make inferences and generate questions we examine observations through “lenses” of curriculum, instruction, assessment, programing, expectations, equity, teacher preparation, etc.

  24. Two Types of Inferences/Questions • Does the inference/question relate to something over which we have control? • Does the inference/question relate to something which, if improved, will lead significant impact on student learning?

  25. Observation Statement to Inference/Question Our use of data and progress monitoring with AIMSweb has helped us better meet the needs of our 3rd grade students Is there a relationship between teacher instruction and the increase in student absentee? What instructional changes have led to the reduction in student retention?

  26. Questions on Inferences? Write your observations and inferences/ findings on the appropriate section of the Summary of Local Achievement Data Form. Upload the form into the Document Upload workspace on your Indistar DASHBOARD. Use the Data Reports folder. Performance Summary of Local Measures Used to Track Student Achievement (Not NECAP) (Duplicate as necessary to report all local measures of student achievement) ELA Student Achievement Assessment Tool: *What do you infer from your data about the effectiveness of your curriculum and instruction for improving student achievement? ___________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________
