History of the Superhero films • Most Superhero films are originated from the ideas of superhero comic books, as these were made a long time before superhero films existed. • Superhero films were originally aimed at children in the 1940s, releasing films like Captain Marvel, Batman and Superman. • Since the 2000’s, there has been a massive rise in the amount of superhero films that have been produced. A main reason for this could be the other events that took place. An example of this is the rise of superhero films after 9/11 in 2001, where America wanted to prove their dominance.

Iconography of the Superhero film Iconography • Costumes – Either bright and bold, or dark and mysterious • Religion – Superheroes can be seen to go against some religions, reflecting badly on younger audiences. • Icons – Most Superhero movies include gadgets not yet created, other universes, and other general fiction topics. • Superpowers – Usually unique and unusual, e.g. Spiderman creates webs, and Superman can fly etc.

  9. Stretch and Challenge: Ideologies/Contexts • Superhero movies can have some different effects on different social groups, like religion, group, class and culture. One example of how superhero movie can effect religion is the use of powers. As ost religious leaders are supposedly ‘immortal’ and may have different powers, to regular humans, some people might see this as a comparison to these leaders which can come across as quite disrespectful to certain religions.
