Originally developed by Android Inc., Google purchased in 2005, Android was launched in 2007 as well as the founding of the Open Handset Alliance - a consortium of hardware, software and telecommunications companies dedicated to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Since the first commercial Android device in September 2008, the operating system has gone through several major versions, the current version 8.0 being "Oreo", released in August 2017. Android applications can be downloaded from Google Play Store, 2.7 million applications in February 2017. Android was the best-selling operating system on tablets since 2013 and works with the vast majority of smartphones. In May 2017, Android has two billion active monthly users and has the largest installed base of any operating system.
