  1. Elaborate Using a sentence carousel Source: http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/3373 By DPI Writing Strategies LEARN NC, a program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education, finds the most innovative and successful practices in K–12 education and makes them available to the teachers and students of North Carolina — and the world.

  2. Step 1: Add a Descriptor (Adjective/adverb) • Original Sentence: The dog was sad. • Add an adjective. • New Sentence: The floppy-eared dog was sad. • Better, but still not BEST.

  3. Step 2: Add an Action Word (VERB) • Original Sentence: The dog was sad. • Better Sentence: The floppy-eared dog was sad. • Add an ACTION WORD (VERB) • New Sentence: The floppy-eared dog whined. • Better, but still not BEST.

  4. Step 3: Add a “Why” phrase • Why was the dog sad? We know he’s sad because he is whining. WHY is he whining? • New Sentence: The floppy-eared dog whined as his master drove away. • Better than “The dog was sad,” but still not BEST.

  5. Step 4: Add a more specific noun • Decent sentence: The floppy-eared dog whined as his master drove away. • Change a non-specific noun (DOG) to a more specific noun • New sentence: The floppy-eared Basset Hound whined as his master drove away. • Much better than “The dog was sad,” but can it be better?

  6. Step 5: Repeat a Step of your choice • Original Sentence: The dog was sad. • MUCH better sentence: The floppy-eared Basset Hound whined as his master drove away. • Add something else. Choose to repeat ANY of the steps. Let’s add another describing word. Let’s describe HOW the dog whined. A word that describes a verb is an ADVERB. Let’s add an adverb. • The floppy-eared Basset Hound whined pitifully as his master drove away.

  7. Let’s Review • The dog was sad. • (Descriptor) Adjective • The floppy-eared dog was sad. • Action Word (VERB) • The floppy-eared dog whined. • WHY?!? • The floppy-eared dog whined as his master drove away. • Specify. • The floppy-earedBasset Hound whined as his master drove away. • Repeat a step for the most description possible. • The floppy-eared Basset Hound whined pitifully as his master drove away.
