  1. DIABETES OVERVIEW Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) resulting from either a lack of insulin production or the body's inability to effectively use insulin How diabetes affects the body Diabetes affects the body by causing elevated blood sugar levels, which can damage blood vessels and organs over time, leading to complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, and vision problems. Types of complications of diabetes Complications of diabetes include cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage (neuropathy), vision problems (retinopathy), foot complications, and an increased risk of infections. How to check the level of blood glucose To check blood glucose levels, use a glucose meter to obtain a small blood sample from a finger prick, then place the sample on a test strip and insert it into the meter for an immediate reading of the blood glucose level. Symptoms of diabetes mellitus Common symptoms of diabetes mellitus include increased thirst (polydipsia), frequent urination (polyuria), unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing. Management of diabetes mellitus Diabetes mellitus is managed through lifestyle modifications including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, medication or insulin therapy, and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels.
