  2. Political Economics Discourses: Indonesian Cases Meaning of political economics? • “the theory to understand the relation b/w economy and politics”. • This theory is useful to clarify public policy and business environment.

  3. Why Political Economic? • We have used the term “political economy” to direct attention to the political, institutional, and historical factors affecting economic growth and income distribution

  4. Why Political Economic? • The analysis could be broadened in 2 ways: • Taking account the organizational factors affecting the workings of the market mechanism and the administrative & fiscal machinery of the government • Taking account of the political factors affecting economic decision making

  5. The vested interest group. • In political-economics concept: the policies can be applied due to interest of vested interest group. • Jadi kebijakan yang dibuat tergantung pada cost-benefit the vested interest group.

  6. Adakah perdebatan mengenai hubungan ekonomi dan politik? • No! But there are debates about which one to be first?) • ISEI Case • APEC Case • Bung Karno (Old Order) case

Alasan masing-masing pandangan • Economy first: if ec. success (rich)  political consciousness/awarenessP (no political awareness if the peoples hungry) • Political first : political democracy  institution&public control  (Remember: economic policy is political decisions!) • Simultaneous!!   8. Indonesia? • (Soeharto era: economic first but only conglomerates and political elites) • High ec growth not automatically accelerate political democracy  depend on process • High economic growth due to 4 factors!!

  11. Stabilitas ekonomi dan Politik (Sekarang: Politikm dulu??) • Usaha untuk membangun demokrasi sulit diharpkan dari elit politik yg memperoleh banyak manfaat dari situasi yg ada!!!
