ADVANCING PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT • Provost Bruininks establishes Administrative Advisory Committee and Civic Engagement Task Force for Public Engagement • Council on Public Engagement (COPE) established • Community Engaged Scholars program is established • University-wide definition of “engagement” is adopted • Senior administrative position for public engagement established • Victor Bloomfield appointed as first Associate Vice President for Public Engagement; UM receives Carnegie Classification • Promotion and tenure guidelines are revised to encourage public engagement • Ten-point plan to advance and isntitutionalize public engagement is developed

Definition of Engagement “Engagement is the partnership of university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.” University of Minnesota
