  1. Evaluating We need to know: • How to describe a performance. • The basic skills required. • How to break a performance down. • Activity specific terminology. • Corrective procedures.

  2. Describing • Making value judgements about a particular performance. • Recognise what is positive and negative about a skill or skills. • Describe these in a critical but constructive manner. • Use appropriate terminology.

  3. Basic Skills • We must be able to name and describe a range of common skills from a range of activities. • This may include activities from outwith the course. • We must recognise the need for balance, coordination, control and creativity in increasingly difficult situations.

  4. Performance Breakdown • All skills can be broken down into stages. • A simple skills has few parts to it. • A complex skill has many parts to it. • Combination skills are the most difficult to break down and describe: These may involve more than one person and more than one skill.

  5. Terminology We need to use activity specific terms when describing a performance. We also need to learn the meanings of certain words. For example: Basketball ( Fast Break, Rebound, Blocking Out, Screening, Man to man, Zone)

  6. Corrective Procedures We need to suggest ways that performance can be corrected or improved. This has to be done in a positive manner. For example: “The hockey player needs to keep his hands together at the top of the stick when ‘hitting’”.(good) “The hockey player should not have his hands apart when ‘hitting’” (bad)
