  4. Hmm.. • The US and Soviet Union always fought indirectly • Played havoc with conflicts in different parts of the world • Words rather than weapons • Threatened and denounced each other • Tried to make the other look foolish

  5. DECISIONS! • Harry Truman's decision to concentrate on European theater rather than Pacific • Two-front war is a strong fundamental strategic choice (Germany) • George Catlett Marshall (special representative to president): proposed a strategy to that concentrated on Europe rather than China • $400 million aid in Greece and Turkey, successful

  6. DECISIONS! • Marshall Plan's economic and financial assistance to Western Europe • Strengthened economies and governments of the countries • Declination of communism became popular • US aid in blockade with help of France and Britain

  7. NATO • “To keep Russia out, American in and Germany down” • Defend against Soviet forces in Europe • SUCCESS; still around today

  8. Warsaw Pact • Six years later • “The Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance” • Made in response to NATO and the re-militarization of West Germany • Hungary tried to get out of it, Soviet crushed the uprising • FAIL; ended in 1991

  9. SEATO • Southeast Asia Treaty Organization • Ceased the spread of communism in eight countries • Did not agree to help each other militarily • Dissolved after Vietnam, 1977

  10. Cuba • JFK’s early presidency, Cuban exiles trained by America’s CIA, invaded Cuba wanting to oust communism • US failed to send military planes to protect them during invasion, mission failed

  11. Cuban Missile Crisis • JFK’s second year in office, the discovery of missiles in Cuba • Khruschev agreed to remove the missiles if the US agreed to not interfere in Cuba

  12. JFK and nuclear arms • 1963, two sides reached a major arms control agreement • Banned tests of nuclear weapons above ground, under water, and in space • Direct phone line established between white house and kremlin

  13. Nixon and Brezhnev • East and west relations improved • Met several arms control agreements • One reducing numbers of missiles used to shoot down enemy nuclear weapons • Banned testing and deployment of long-distance missiles for five years

  14. Reagan and Gorbachev • Had four meetings together • Gorbachev withdrew Soviet forces out of Afghanistan • Signed agreement to destroy all INF missiles and SRINF missiles

  15. Cutting ties • By 1989, Eastern Europe was cutting ties with USSR • Gorbachev didn’t intervene • Within one year, East and West Germany was no more • Few months after, Warsaw Pact dissolved
