  2. Allusion • a reference in one work of literature to a person, place, or event in another work of literature or in history, art, or music

  3. Aside • A short speech directed to the audience, or another character, that is not heard by the other characters on stage.

  4. Conflict • a struggle (between two opposing forces or characters)

  5. Dramatic irony • When the reader or viewer know something that a character does not know.

  6. Foil • A character who provides a striking contrast to another character.

  7. Imagery • Descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader.

  8. Metaphor • A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, but have something in common.

  9. Pun • A joke that comes from a play on words.

  10. Sonnet • 14 lines, 10 syllables each. Ends in a couplet.

  11. Theme • An underlying message about life or human nature that a writer wants the reader to understand.
