  2. Birth…. • Otto Stern was born on February 17th, 1888. • He was born in Shorau, Upper Silesia, Germany. Otto Stern on the right side.

  3. School Years…. • 1892 moved to Breslau, to attend high school. • Received Ph.D. from University of Breslau in 1912. • Went to University of Frankfort in1914.

  4. Work Years…. • From 1921 to 1922 he was Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Rostock. • In 1923, Otto Stern became Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of the laboratory at University of Hamburg.

  5. Work Years Continued… • He became Professor of Physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh until 1945. • That same year he became the professor of emeritus.

  6. Experimental Physics… • Otto Stern developed the molecular beam method. • He proved it to be a powerful tool for investigating properties of atoms and atomic nuclei.

  7. Experimental Physics (cont’d)… • One early application was an experimental verification of Maxwell's law of velocity distribution in gases. • His work on the production of interference by rays of hydrogen and helium was a striking demonstration of the wave nature of atoms and molecules.

  8. Awards He Received… • awarded an LL.D. by the University of California, Berkeley, 1930 • He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA). • the American Association for the Advancement of Science
