  1. Design Your School Wisconsin High School Design CompetitionSponsored by With support from

  2. Students as Experts By the time a student reaches high school in the United States, he or she has spent over 7,000 hours in the classroom.

  3. Working with instructors and an architect-mentor, student teams will: Create a design for a school in their own community based on environmentally sustainable principles. Select a type of school and its location based on the needs of their community.Determine if the project will be a new design or a renovation and recycling of an existing building in their community.

  4. The Goal To engage students to create thoughtful, sustainable design and promote better school facilities for their communities.

  5. The Process • Research: design, sustainability, schools possibly include tours and guest speakers • Locate site in their community • Sketching concepts executing sustainable elements

  6. Timeline • Sign-up/Mentor Assignments • (December) • Research: 2 Months (Semester Start) • Site Location: 1 Week • Sketch concepts: 1 Month • Presentation: 3 Weeks

  7. Awards • A team of Architects, specializing in sustainability and school design, will jury submissions and select top entries • Entries will be displayed at the AIA Wisconsin state-wide Convention on May 20 & 21 in Madison • Certificates will be available for participants. Winning teams will receive a plaque and cash award (1st place $500, 2nd place $300, 3rd place $200)

  8. Commitment • Instructor/Teacher • Curriculum design • Student guidance and instruction working together • Architect-Mentor • Classroom visits (min. 2-3) • Assistance with each of the stages • Provide resources and guides • Assist with scheduling tours

  9. Signing up. . . Fill out form and return it to AIA Wisconsin A mentor will be assigned to your school in December to allow for planning and consultation Participation will be limited to 15 teams for the 2009 Competition.
