Principle 9Environmentally Sound Technologies • Understanding Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) • “Environmentally Sound Technologies protect the environment, are less polluting, use all resources in a more sustainable manner, recycle more of their wastes and products, and handle residual wastes in a more acceptable manner. • ESTs are not just individual technologies, but total systems which include know-how, procedures, and goods, services and equipment, as well as organisational and managerial processes.”

Principle 9Environmentally Sound Technologies • Environmentally Sound Technologies draw on both management & research capabilities of an organisation: • Organisational and managerial processes • Cleaner production • Eco-efficiency • Industrial ecology • Specific technologies, goods and services, and equipment • End-of-pipe treatment technologies • Renewable energy sources • Alternative production processes that are less polluting and/or more resource efficient • Closed-loop systems A long term challenge

Principle 9Environmentally Sound Technologies • Strategic level approaches to ESTs: • Establish a corporate policy on ESTs • Increase internal awareness of the benefits of ESTs • Improve company culture & practices to facilitate ESTs • Refocus research and development towards design for sustainability • Benchmark against Best Available Technologies • Identify alternative ESTs • Use life cycle assessment in developing new technologies and products • Employ Environmental Technology Assessment, an analytical tool designed to assist the sustainability decision-making processes related to technology adaptation, implementation and use • Examine investment criteria and supplier/contractor sourcing policy to ensure that tenders stipulate minimum environmental criteria • Co-operate with industry partners to ensure that ‘best available technology’ is available to other organisations
