Program Overview We’ve developed this program because we care about our students and want to provide them with every opportunity to succeed, not just now but also in the future. The purpose of the AH Summer Math Series is to: • increase our students’ grades in math courses • reduce the number of students testing as non-math-ready • increase the math readiness of our students going into their first year of college • provide FREE materials to students Our data shows: • math courses present the most common obstacle to academic success • struggles with math courses are the biggest reason for students dropping out for academic reasons
Program Overview The AH Summer Math Series is intended to provide an intensive self-paced/tutoring opportunity to American Honors students. This program is for two groups of incoming students, as well as current American Honors students. 1. Those who need to prepare for a placement test and college math readiness (or prepare to retest) so that they can test as “college-ready” and avoid bridge programs or conditional admittance. 2. Those who have tested into College Algebra, Trigonometry or Calculus, but haven’t had math for several semesters or who don’t feel confident in their math skills, provide a refresher so that they begin their math courses with confidence.
Program Overview The AH Summer Math Series will be developed utilizing resources available through Khan Academy. Important things to know about the material and it’s delivery: • Parallel course shell in Quad that will target particular topics in Khan Academy platform • Will follow a “Curriculum” that has been developed by our “Lead Coach” that is aligned with concepts, objectives and material directly related to the four offerings • Samples of the aligned curriculum available here • All content through Khan Academy is 100% free • **Still need to attribute, when necessary** • Students will access Quad, Post-ITE, to see our customized curriculum and additional materials made available by the Coaches
Program Overview The AH Summer Math Series will feature four distinct tracks available to students: • AH Placement Prep and College-Level Mathematics Readiness: This material will prepare students for a math placement test, with an emphasis on preparing students for achieving a college-ready math placement and readiness. • AH Algebra Prep: This material addresses concepts included in College Algebra, preparing students to succeed in American Honors Algebra courses. • AH Trigonometry Prep: This material addresses concepts included in Trigonometry, preparing students to succeed in American Honors Trigonometry courses. • AH Calculus Prep: Designed for students who will be taking AH Calculus as a review of concepts and preparation for successful articulation. “Sprint Weeks” – Designated time frames when students will work through the content provided in a more intensive manner, while actively engaging with their coach and adviser.

Central: **6/23 - 6/27**, 7/28 - 8/1 & 8/4 - 8/8 (Start 8/25) East: 7/7 - 7/11, 7/21 - 7/25 & 8/4 - 8/8 (Start 8/23 & 9/3) West: 7/28 - 8/1, 8/4 - 8/8 & 8/25 - 8/29 (Both start 9/22) **Sprint Week will be available for all interested AH students’ that may want to take summer classes**

Student Experience Student Feedback from Survey • It helped keep me accountable for my math but I would have liked an adobe meeting where we could meet "face to face" so I could get to know people and keep in touch with them for support a little more. The sprint week I attended wasn't on this form. • Sprint Week provide me with a helpful glimpse of what to expect in the coming school year. • Refreshed my skills and helped in areas I was struggling • The Sprint Week explained every skill in detail which helped me improve my math skills. • Gave me a course plan to follow. • Sprint Week helped to introduce me to Khan Academy, which led me to new opportunities found on the website that will help me in my college classes, not just my math course • It helped me review some of the material that I either didn't understand or that I didn't remember the from when I first learned it. • Advice, tutoring, and interactivity
Coach Experience • Knowledge of the relevant math content. • Familiarity with student placement exams (Accuplacer, Compass, etc.). • Familiarity with college mathematics sequences for STEM and non-STEM tracks. • Strong understanding of the necessary topics required at all levels of mathematics. • Strong assessment of the skills students do not realize that they need for success in a mathematics course.
Coach Experience Coach Feedback: From Jacque F. - • The students that are putting the effort into practicing and completing the sections that I recommend seem to be moving forward. • However, there are many students that are not doing as much practice as I had hoped. • Maybe giving the students deadlines to complete specific "units" would help motivate them. This might be in form of a Quiz. • The platform and mode of learning through KhanAcademy are excellent. I like the tools that students can utilize from the videos to earning badges. From Jenn - • I could tell from what they were working on that people had seen my emails and were taking some of my advice, but I got almost no actual questions from students. • It’s hard to advise students if I don’t know more about them and what their goals are, but very few of them got in touch with me
Where do we go from here... Reflections, targets, goals and how we’d like to see this grow… • Utilize a virtual meeting space, maybe Adobe Connect, to allow students the chance to meet with their Coach or other students. • Check points within Quad, such as quizzes or deadlines of sorts. This will allow the coaches to see how well the students understand the materials. • Add additional materials to provide students a robust learning experience. • Determine methods in which to facilitate and encourage participation amongst the students and coaches. • Once demand is high enough, branch off materials for each community college. • Adding/editing our pre-survey • Suggestions for engaging students with peers, coach or materials?
