EFFECTIVE READING AND WRITING STRATEGIES • Why don’t we read? • Boring – Why read when we can just watch the movie? • Not Enough Time – Too busy with other stuff • No Book – Nothing to read where you live or work ENG 2D - Wilson ? • Confusion – Just don’t understand what is read... ...It’s easy to deal with the first three issues... But how do you deal with the last one?

One of the best strategies is more reading; it’s a good way to develop vocabulary and understanding. Also, reading is a necessary skill in any job as well as your life, (Drivers Test, Job Applications, Love Letters.... Etc.) ENG 2D - Wilson Elements of English 10 includes several reading strategies for different types of writing including short stories, poetry, plays, novels and newspapers.

First, understand what’s going on, and then focus on the parts of the story ENG 2D - Wilson 2. Jot down notes as you read. Impressions of characters and events, important points, etc. 3. Write a list of words that you do not understand. Look these words up later and then reread the story.

ENG 2D - Wilson 2. Read the cast of characters. Pay attention to the relationships of the characters and keep notes to keep track of how they interact. 3. Read the stage directions. The playwright includes information to help you picture what is happening.

Make predictions based on pictures, the title, etc. ENG 2D - Wilson 2. Follow a reading schedule after reading a few pages or chapters. Record your reading in a log to track your progress. 3. Read where there are few distractions. 4. Read with a pen and sticky-notes close by to mark important information. Write your thoughts on sticky-notes to mark pages.

Read critically. Does the author provide support for their information? 3. Form your own opinions about the topic.
