  1. Cooperative Station History Imaging Jeff Arnfield Active Archive Branch National Climatic Data Center Asheville, NC

  2. Background • Metadata critical to interpreting observations • Much station metadata not in digital form • Errors in digital station metadata over time • Supporting documents in multiple locations • Combination of unique, overlapping and contradictory • Problem resolution requires physical access • Labor intensive, geographically restricted access CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  3. Task Goals • Image, index and provide access to about 600,000 pages of Coop station history information • Integrate multiple document repositories • Retain “locational significance” • Image documents • Inventory and index documents • Permit authorized researchers to search for and view documents • Permit NCDC to enhance digital database • Provide images and indices to NCDC archive CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  4. Meeting the Challenges • Integration of documents from multiple sources • Integration task requires expertise • Document variety complicates indexing • Some groupings must be maintained • Poor quality originals complicate imaging • NCDC required access to documents during the process CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  5. Indexing • Folder Level • State • Station name • Coop Station Id • Document level • State • Station Name • Coop Station Id • Call Sign • Form Type • Rendition/Supplement Letter • Error Flag • Effective Date • Image Count CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  6. Task Roadmap • On-site discovery • On-site integration • On-site inventory • Batching and shipping • Imaging • Indexing • Quality control • Posting for access • NCDC: Image and index quality assurance • NCDC: Follow-up quality control CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  7. Project Timeline CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  8. Current Status CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  9. Along the way…. • Initial on-site discovery process critical • Complexity of document organization required hands-on evaluation • Contractor could refine task scope and develop better procedures • Alter plan, complete detailed inventory in WV • Take advantage of trained, experienced resources • Faster and less expensive completion • Communication to resolve ambiguities • Detailed status reporting CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  10. Steps to completion • Majority of documents will be loaded to WSSRD by end of November 2001 • NCDC preparing to ship “stragglers” • Stragglers completed by end of February 2001 CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging

  11. Followup Projects • NCDC: Integration of inventory and index data with NCDC digital station history database • NCDC: Resolution of outstanding issues from imaged documents • CDMP FY2002: Imaging of Non-Cooperative Surface Weather Observing Station History Documents • Pending approval CDMP – Coop Station History Imaging
