  2. What is HIV/AIDS? • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an immune system disease that kills all the “good” cells and makes your immune system very weak. • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a result of HIV and it causes a severe loss of the body’s cellular immunity.

History • 1931: From chimpanzees HIV/AIDS jumps to humans • 1981: HIV/AIDS first observed by CDC • 1989: Number of reported cases of AIDS in America = 100,000 • 1994: AIDS = top cause of death for Americans ages 25-44 • 1999: HIV/AIDS = fourth largest killer worldwide (33 million infected, 14 million dead) • Number of people living with HIV or AIDS: • dark red: 1,000,000+ • light red: 500,00-1,000,000 • orange: 50,00-100,000 • light green: 10,000-50,000 • gray: -10,000

Successes • Condoms have been mass-distributed across Africa (a hotbed of HIV/AIDS) and condom distribution projects have been successful in developed countries as well. • U.S. AIDS initiative: PEPFAR (The Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), launched in 2003. • Programs in Botswana, Tanzania, and Nigeria treated over 160,000 patients with life saving antiretroviral drugs • 25 countries have seen over a 50% drop in new HIV infections since 2001 • In 2011, 1.7 million dies from AIDS, 24% fewer than in 2005

Efforts That Have Failed • No vaccine created or discovered • Lack of widespread awareness of HIV/AIDS and drug treatment in third world countries. • HIV/AIDS counseling and testing provides false security. • People can’t be forced to practice safe sex. • Continued increase of AIDS in gay men by 8% a year since 2001.

Why you should fund in HIV/AIDS relief • Number of people with HIV/Aids receiving treatment has increase 10-fold since 2002 • Prevention has helped reduce HIV • USA-infection number has remained stable • Global organization: The global fund: Since its establishment in 2002, the Global Fund has supported more than 1,000 programs in 151 countries, providing AIDS treatment for 4.2 million people
