Chemical Hygiene Plan • Outlines chemical, as well as general safety requirements for Milwaukee Public Schools • Chemical Hygiene Officer • Works with staff to implement and annually review the Chemical Hygiene Plan • Maintains training records, inventories, MSDS • Ensures employees and students have received proper safety training • Must review and sign-off on chemical purchases

Not Just the First Week! • Safety rules must be reviewed with students • Suggested that you model safety procedures for students • Suggested that you test students on safety rules and procedures • Safety posters in classroom are required • Safety equipments must be labeled • Include questions about safety in quizzes and tests throughout the year • Perform “safety drills” in your classroom

Safety Audit Findings – Common Deficiencies • Eye wash stations inoperable, blocked • Fire Blankets missing • Fume hoods inoperable, or used for storage • Goggle sterilizer inoperable • Chemical inventory not updated, or found • No MSDS file • Gas shut-offs in locked cabinet, or no sign • Safety Rules not signed by parents • Unlabeled bottles of material

  9. Safety Audit Findings – Other Deficiencies • Unsecured gas bottles • Incompatible materials stored together • Chemicals are stored alphabetically • Flammable cabinets contain non-flammable chemicals • Acid cabinets contain other chemicals • Fire Extinguishers not inspected
