  1. “There’s a Probe for That” Brianna Rapini and Connie Rowe

  2. Using Vernier Probes… • Allows you to save time with complex lab setups. • Allows accurate data collection with numerical data readings students can visualize in real time. • Allows for students to easily design their own experiments or extend experiments. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” -Benjamin Franklin

  3. The Research

  4. Some Pitfalls with Typical Science Labs(This can happen with probes too!) • Just following a “cookbook” procedure. Student unsure of purpose of what they are doing or the connection to real life so it is not meaningful. • Students are not interested in the material and are not engaged. • Students are not thinking about the data or considering whether it is even logical. Labs need to be relevant and meaningful to students.

  7. Vernier Probes and Sensors Highlighted ones are the most common at campuses, but this varies. Ask your department chair or specialist.

  8. An interface is the component that communicates and connects with the probe. The Interfaces LabQuest Needs no computer, probe(s) connect(s) directly to it, and can visualize data directly on interface. LabPro and CBL2 can connect probe(s) to TI graphing calculators like TI-84. LabPro can also connect to a computer. EasyLinkconnects single probe directly to a TI-84 Plus or TI-Nspire. Go!Linkconnects single probe directly to a student tablet or computer.

  9. How do I know whether probes will work for my particular lab? • Vernier has a database with over 400 labs on their website. http://www.vernier.com/experiments/ • Type in the topic that you are interested in finding a lab for in the search feature, or as an alternative, view the Vernier Lab Books listed at the bottom of the link. • Full versions of all these labs (which include safety information, teacher notes, and keys) are available in the full lab books. Your campus can order these. (Check with your department chair or specialist as many campuses already have many of these books!)

  10. “Why should I care about this lab?” • When planning labs, including probe labs, strive to find a way to relate it to “real life” that students can connect to with past experiences. This makes it relevant to students. • Many of the stations you will encounter today will ask you to think of how you could connect it to students. • Stuck? Check out Vernier’s “Innovative” Lab Topics for ideas! http://www.vernier.com/innovate

  11. How to download Vernier LoggerPro (or LoggerLite) 1. Click Start 2. Click Control Panel 3. Click “Run Advertised Programs” and then search for the software

  12. LabQuests • LabQuests are portable, durable, water resistant, and have a battery life that lasts 8 hours. • The interface is a little less user friendly than tablets. For this reason, the two stations you visit today with LabQuests have reference handouts and ask you to view a short video clip before starting.
