  6. Words to Delete • Arrogant words • Angry words

  7. Arrogance Definition: Feeling superior and claiming more importance for oneself than is warranted Synonyms: proud, haughty, lordly, insolent, supercilious, disdainful All these words mean showing scorn for inferiors

  8. Delete Arrogant Words Arrogant words… • Exalt us over others • Look down on others • Make us look impressive

  9. Examples of Arrogant Words • Boasting (speaking with excessive pride) • Judging (openly finding fault) • Mocking (making fun of) • Cursing (calling on the supernatural to bring others harm) • Reviling (abusive language) • Instead, speak of/to others with humility/respect

  10. Cost & Cure The Cost of Arrogance: Rebuke and Cursing by God Ps. 119:21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are cursed and who stray from your commands. The Cure: Fear of the Judgment of God Rom. 11:20 Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.

  11. Boasting Things we shouldn’t boast about: • Ourselves (Prov. 27:2)

  12. Prov. 27:2 Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.

  13. Boasting Things we shouldn’t boast about: • Ourselves (Prov. 27:2) • Tomorrow (Prov. 27:1)

  14. Prov. 27:2 Do not boast about tomorrow,    for you do not know what a day may bring.

  15. Boasting Things we shouldn’t boast about: • Ourselves (Prov. 27:2) • Tomorrow (Prov. 27:1) • How valuable we are to God Rom. 3:27-28 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

  16. The Cure for Boasting Boast in the Lord Jer. 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.

  17. Things we should boast about • The cross of Christ Gal. 6:14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

  18. Things we should boast about • The perseverance and faith of others 2 Thes. 1:3-4 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love everyone of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all thepersecutions and trials you are enduring.

  19. Things we should boast about • Things that show our weakness II Cor. 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

  20. Judging What we tend to judge and shouldn’t: • The spirituality of others relative to our own Luke 18:11-12 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

  21. Judging What we tend to judge and shouldn’t: • The spirituality of others relative to our own • Another person’s views on disputable matters • Bounded diversity

  22. Judging What we tend to judge and shouldn’t: • The spirituality of others relative to our own • Another person’s views on disputable matters • The relative worth of people The Problem: We take God’s place when we judge the wrong things James 4:12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

  23. Cost & Cure The Cost: God’s will judge us like we judge others Matt. 7:1 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. The Cure: • Solve your own life not everyone else’s • Judge the right things • The spiritual truth of what is taught I Cor. 10:15 I speak to sensible people;judge for yourselves what I say. • The measure of faith God has given you

  24. Rom 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

  25. Delete Angry Words • Examples • Angry outbursts (esp. with blocked goals) • Bitter words (expressing deep resentment) • Quarreling over offenses or dominance • Instead, speak gently and patiently(which basically means we put up with a lot)

  26. Dealing with Angry Words • It is honorable to avoid a quarrel Prov. 20:3 It is to one’s honor to avoid strife,    but every fool is quick to quarrel.

  27. Dealing with Angry Words • It is honorable to avoid a quarrel • Therefore overlook hurtful words Prov. 12:16Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.

  28. Dealing with Angry Words • It is honorable to avoid a quarrel • Therefore overlook hurtful words • Return a gentle answer Prov. 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath,    but a harsh word stirs up anger.

  29. Dealing with Angry Words • It is honorable to avoid a quarrel • Therefore overlook hurtful words • Return a gentle answer • Work on developing self-control Prov. 16:32 Better a patient person than a warrior,    one with self-control than one who takes a city.

  30. Dealing with Angry Words • Realize human anger does not accomplish the righteous life God wants James 1:19-20My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

  31. Dealing with Angry Words • Realize human anger does not accomplish the righteous life God wants • Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger • Anger and angry words are to be stopped and replaced Eph. 4:31-32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

  32. The PO-PO Principle Put Off & Put On You were taught, with regard to your former wayof life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be madenew in the attitude of your minds; and toput on the new self, created to be like Godin true righteousness and holiness.Eph. 4:22-24
