  1. How To Change A Car Tire

  2. There are certain skills that every driver should learn, and knowinghow to change a tire on a car is one of the most important. Some driver’s manage to go their entire lives without ever having a flat tire, while others get them on a regular basis. The chance of you getting a flat depends on a number of different factors such as tire age, driving conditions, and how well you’ve looked after your tires, but even the best tires can sometimes be punctured by a stray nail or other sharp object. However it happened, it’s important to get it sorted as soon as possible, because driving on a flat can be dangerous and is very likely to damage your vehicle even more. If you’ve got cell phone reception, you may be able to call a Mobile Car Tire Service Goshen, NY to help repair and possibly change your tire, but if you’re without your phone or a decent signal, it’s good to know how to change a tire on a caryourself.

  3. Find A Safe Location The first and most important thing to do after getting a flat is to find somewhere safe to pull over. It’s worth risking damage to your rims, and driving to somewhere safe, rather than leaving your car in a dangerous spot. Put your parking brake and hazard lights on, to warn other drivers that you are stopped. If you have a warning triangle, it’s good to display this on the trunk lid interior or place it a few feet down the road if it has a stand.

  4. Tools For The Job Although it’s not a legal requirement to carry a spare tire in your car, it’s definitely advisable for situations like this. Without a spare tire, your only option is to call for roadside assistance, where a technician will patch up your tire, so it’s safe for you to drive. You try carry these essential tools in your vehicle, just in case: • Jack - to lift the vehicle off the ground • Lug Wrench - to remove the wheel nuts • Wheel Chocks/bricks - to stop the car rolling when jacked up • Vehicle Owner’s Manual - for reference on jacking points etc

  5. To prevent your car from rolling, put wheel chocks or bricks either side of the tires and make sure all passengers are out of the vehicle. Locate the flat tire and remove the hubcap or wheel cover to get to the lug nuts, if they are exposed, you can leave the cover on. Most hubcaps can be removed using the flat end of the lug wrench, but if you’re not able to do so, consult your vehicle’s manual. Using the lug wrench, loosen the lug nuts counterclockwise about ½ an inch, but not take them off completely.

  6. The next step is to get your car up in the air, for this you’ll need your jack. The right place for the jack will usually be under the vehicle frame, near where the flat tire is. There will often be a cleared area of exposed metal specifically for the jack, and if you can’t find this, it’s worth checking for the location in your vehicle’s manual. If you have a small plank of wood with you, you can use this to help stabilise the jack. Once everything is in place, begin to raise the car using the jack, until the punctured wheel is around 6 inches above the ground, making sure no part of your body is underneath the car while it’s raised.

  7. Now that the car is raised, you can unscrew the lug nuts the rest of the way and remove them. Once you’ve removed all of the lug nuts, slowly slide the tire towards you and lay it flat on the ground to avoid it rolling away and causing danger to other vehicles. Now do the reverse with the spare tire, lining up the rim with the lug bolts, and then replacing the lug nuts and tightening them by hand. Use the jack to bring the vehicle down until the spare tire is in contact with the ground, and then use your lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts, clockwise, as much as you can. Bring the vehicle all the way down to the ground and remove the jack, and then try once more to tighten all the lug nuts as far as they’ll go.

  8. Your spare tire is now fitted, but there’s a few things to check before you depart. The first thing to do is to tidy up your tools, to make sure you don’t leave anything behind. Stow your flat tire and hubcap where you found the spare, and put the jack, lug wrench, chocks and manual back where you found them. If you have one, use a tire pressure gauge to check the spare tire has enough air. If not, you should be able to check and refill tires at a nearby service station. Your spare tire is not designed to be driven on for very long, so it’s important to take your punctured tire into a garage at your earliest opportunity, where the technicians will either repair or replace it for you.
