Warm Up Questions - Week 1 • Directions: Turn in your notebook to page 11, write the title below and answer the following question for each day in a COMPLETE SENTENCE. • Monday –No School! • Tuesday – What is the purpose of a map legend? • Wednesday – Based on the map to right, what is one conclusion that you can make from the information given? • Thursday –What is the difference between a physical map and a political map? • Friday – What is one positive thing you enjoyed about the Mapping Our World activity?

  5. PLACE What is it like there? What kind of place is it? - Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, rivers, deserts, etc.) climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc. - Human Characteristics • What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs? • How many people live, work, and visit a place?

You are Here LOCATION • Where are we? • - Relative Location • Described by landmarks, time, • direction or distance from one place to another. • Ex. - Go 1 mile west on Main St. • and turn left for 1 block. - Absolute Location • A latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). • Ex.- Paris France is 48oN Latitude and 2oE Longitude. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

  7. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION • How do humans and the environment affect each other? • We depend on it. • Ex. People depend on the Tennessee River for water and transportation. • We modify it. • Ex. People modify their environment by heating and cooling buildings for comfort. • We adapt to it. • Ex. -We adapt by wearing clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and winter (coats), rain and shine.

REGIONS • How are Regions similar to and different from other places? • Formal Regions • Defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States, Countries, Cities) • Defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mtns, Chinatown). • Functional Regions • Defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone coverage area). • Vernacular Regions • Defined by peoples’ perception (Middle East, the South, etc.)

  9. MOVEMENT • How are people, goods, ideas moved from place to place? • Human Movement • Ex. - Trucks, Trains, Planes • Information Movement • Ex. - Phones, computer (e-mail), mail • Idea Movement - How do fads move from place to place? • Ex. - TV, Radio, Magazines

  10. Remembering the 5 themes • If you can’t remembering what they are just ask MR. HELP!!! • M – Movement • R – Regions • HE – Human Environment interaction • L – Location • P - Place

  11. Assignment– Page 10 of your Composition Notebook • Make a Venn Diagram in your notebook. Then write your OWN example for each of the Five Themes of Geography • Make sure you use EVERY theme!!
