  1. ”L3S”: Introducing the Learning Lab Lower Saxony in the Wallenberg Global Learning Network

  2. What the L3S is ... • It is an interdisciplinary research institute situated in the German Pavillon (Expo Plaza 1), with associated startups coming soon • founded cooperatively by three universities in Hannover and Braunschweig and open to other members interested in regional and international cooperation • embedded in the WGLN and its international cooperation network (Stanford, Sweden, etc.) • It has the goal (together with its partners) to motivate and introduce innovative change in teaching and learning

  3. What the L3S does ... • Invent, develop and introduce new learning technologies and services • I-Space (Interactive/Innovative Learning Spaces) • E-Media (Electronic/Interactive Learning Materials) • Introduce, evaluate and improve new educational approaches and environments • E-Learning (Problem-Based Learning, Evaluation) • Motivate and introduce organisational changes, taking the role of a change agent and catalyst • E-Learning (Continuing Education, Learning Partnerships, L3S as Meeting and Cooperation Place)

  4. What the WGLN makes possible ... • share models, results and competencies in regional / international collaborations • focus on strategic initiative areas covered by both local (L3S) as well as global (WGLN) learning lab projects • establish institutional national and international collaboration, involving faculty at participating universities • find, set up and exploit synergies between different universities

  8. Research Question 1 (E-Media) • Question: Can the constant unfolding research knowledge produced at our universities by a diverse set of contributors be made accessible and intelligible for applications outside the source group and outside the university? • Techniques, Methods, Issues: metadata, content modules and courselets, hypermedia and design frameworks, new course and curriculum structures • Previous Projects: e.g. PROMISE, WINETU (pending) • Existing Cooperations: Faculties of Computer Engineering in Hannover, Braunschweig, Clausthal, other German universities (EE, CE, CS)

  9. Research Question 2 (E-Media) • Question: Can we improve learning performance through personal learning portfolios that adapt learning materials to personal learning requirements? • Techniques, Methods, Issues: adaptive hypermedia systems, interface design, project- and problem-based learning, evaluation • Previous Projects: VC, Educational Technology Lab Hannover, Hyperbooks • Existing Cooperations: Uni Hannover, Uni Hildesheim, Uni Bozen

  10. Research Question 8 and 9 (I-Space) • Question: How can VR and remote lab techniques be used for enhancing group collaboration in an educational setting? • Techniques, Methods, Issues: Streaming (VR, video, audio), scientific visualization, annotation, remote control, problem-based learning • Previous Projects: DocShowVR, Supercomputing Center Northern Germany, VR + X - Projects, Remote Lab Hannover • Existing Cooperations: Various Faculties in Hannover, Berlin, Festo Didactic

  11. Research Question 10 (I-Space) • Question: How can the access to training facilities for collaborative teaching and training be improved by wireless and/or intelligent networking? • Techniques, Methods, Issues: ad hoc networks, smart/active networks, wireless LAN, digital TV and media (DVB/T), learning spaces, new learning scenarios • Previous Projects: various BMBF, DFG and industrially-financed projects • Existing Cooperations: various German universities, DVB Technical Committees and Modules, Ericsson, etc.

  12. Research Question 15 (E-Learning) • Question: How can an iterative process of formative theory-based evaluation influence and serve the design of learning processes and environments? • Techniques, Methods, Issues: social constructivist learning theory, formative evaluation • Previous Projects: PBL courses, establishment of a new center for education in engineering • Existing Cooperations: Stanford Learning Lab

  13. How the L3S will work ... • Establish the L3S Research Institute in Hannover (EXPO Plaza, German Pavillon) as prototyping, research, teaching and presentation facility for participating universities and projects • Open Meeting and Cooperation Ground for • L3S Researchers (10 / 20) • L3S Member Institute Researchers (10 / 20) • Affiliated Faculty HAN / BS / ?? (5 / 20) • Students (10 / 20) • WGLN Lab Faculty (5 / 20) • Fully Supported (L3S) Projects, use L3S Organisation and Location as well as L3S Institute Locations + WGLNetwork • Affiliated (L3S + X) Projects, use L3S Location and Distributed Locations + WGLNetwork
