  3. 1:1 Challenges Philosophies: • “… one-to-one program is to support and enhance the curriculum …” • “… one-to-one computing represents the ultimate in technology immersion…” EdTech, Focus on K-12. Nov. 10,2009 Technology: • Infrastructure enhancements • Design considerations • Equipment specifications • Data network security • Management/Visibility • Internet planning

  4. Infrastructure Upgrades: • 802.11n places increased demands on the upstream wired network infrastructure • WLAN Controllers • Backhaul Ethernet • Insufficient Power over Ethernet (PoE) • 802.11n APs require up to twice the 12.95W delivered via 802.3af PoE • Future chipsets may be more power-efficient • Emerging 802.3at PoE standard will deliver 30W Capacity planning must be a part of any 802.11n deployment.

  5. Previous Wired Design Considerations • Chassis based core • Individual 24-port switches at the Access layer • 1 gig uplinks to the IDF’s • 10/100 Ethernet to the classrooms • IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at Power over Ethernet (PoE)

  6. Current Wired Design Considerations • Chassis based core • Chassis based Access layer • 10 gig uplinks to the IDF’s • 10/100/1000 Ethernet to the classrooms • IEEE 802.3af and Enhanced Power over Ethernet (PoE)

  7. Previous Wireless Design Considerations • Design based on users per AP instead maximizing AP coverage area • Equally important is the consideration given to the logical network design. Ie. Broadcast domain.

  8. Current Wireless Design Considerations • Design based on users per AP instead maximizing AP coverage area • Equally important is the consideration given to the logical network design. Ie. Broadcast domain.

  9. Data Network Security Currently Broadcasted SSID Static WEP keys 40 bit encryption Future Broadcast SSID Dynamic encryption keys using WPA2 802.1x Authentication 128 bit encryption

  10. Airwave Wireless Mgt Suite • DeepNines Edge Security Platform Management /Visibility Solarwinds Orion

  11. Total Bytes Transferred over Wireless Network 24 Hr 7 Day 30 Day

  12. Products used to control Internet traffic • Cisco ASA Firewall • Packeteer PacketShaper • DeepNines web filter Internet Utilization and Threats • Internet utilization will increase • Virus treat • Hacking
