  2. Proposal for Restructuring ALHS2011-12 School Year • Study the idea of moving ALHS to an 8-12 building – beginning fall of 2011-12 School Year Why? • Due to space constraints at the elementary schools • Declining enrollment and space available at ALHS

  3. Projected Enrollments 2011-12 • Grades 8-12 = 1,133 Students • Grades 6-7 = 468 Students • Grades K-5 = 1,495 * Elementary buildings are at capacity

  4. District Configuration for 2011-12 High School to include grades 8-12 Middle School – grades 6-7 4 – Elementary buildings grades K-5

  6. Who will be involved in planning? • Faculty and Staff – in all buildings • Parents • Students • Community members • Administration • School Board

  7. Scheduling and Facilities Committee • Type of daily schedule to be considered • How building is used • space – room assignments for teachers, • house concept or department based plan • Locker allocation • Additional computer/technology labs • Study halls • Lunches – separate for 8-9, 10-12?

  8. Curriculum and Programming Committee • Courses to be offered – each grade level • Credits for graduation • Testing issues • New course opportunities • Add a technology requirement? • Exploratory classes • Study skills • Personal learning plans for students • Career planning • Credit recovery

  9. Transitions Committee • Student orientation • 8th and 9th grade mentoring • Advisory • Career Exploration • Staff development • Collaboration – common preps • Personal, emotional and mental health concerns • Moving – staff and students

  10. Activities and Athletics • Increased opportunities for students to be involved in school life at ALHS

  11. Timeline for Decisions • Propose using early out days to address time for building committees to meet • Proposal to Community and School Board by October, 2010

How do You Address the Public? • If you are out in the community and asked about this proposal what can you say? • The elementary building are at capacity • Economic situation makes it difficult to add on additional classroom space to our current elementary buildings • ALHS opened in May of 2000 with an enrollment exceeding 1,200 students • The School Board has asked the administration and staff to look at restructuring our buildings to address these issues
