  1. The Community Interpreter training was extremely useful. Aside from being rich in content, dynamic, and interesting, it had an immediate impact on my working conditions and I recommend it without reservation to anyone in the field or anyone considering joining our ranks. I came to the table as a competent interpreter, with the linguistic skills to perform my job well, so much so that I was already legally certified and had years of experience under my belt. Others in my place might doubt that a training like this would be of much use to them, but it was empowering, enlightening and altogether humbling to find out how much I did not know. Now I feel more fully like a professional, with clarity in my role and professional ethics, the stuff that sets a bilingual speaker just "winging it" apart from an interpreter.

  2. About Community Interpreting. Community interpreting is a growing profession that targets the sectors of health care, education and human and social services. In the past, family and friends used to interpret in these settings. Today, federal civil rights legislation, national ethics and standards for interpreters, hospital Accreditation agencies and many state and municipal laws endorse or promote the use of qualified interpreters, but the journey is still a long way to go.

  3. Skill-building Workshop: Consecutive Mode of Interpreting. Mastering the consecutive mode is critical for medical interpreters, whether beginner or advanced. This session will provide practice in the component parts to consecutive interpreting (active listening, analysing content, delivery) and then help participants identify their skill levels. Through series of targeted activities, participants will better understand their individual strengths and weaknesses and develop specific strategies for improving their consecutive interpreting.

  4. Medical Certification Prep Training. This 2 full day training is for interpreters aspiring to take the medical certification exam either with the CCHI or the NBCMI/IMIA. This training is for Spanish speaking interpreters only. Participants will have material to study prior to the beginning of the course, so reserve your spot immediately to prepare this material.

  5. Spanish Medical Interpreter. Professionalization and Certification are important for Medical and Healthcare Interpreters to achieve recognition, credibility and respect from the community they serve, other healthcare professionals, and in general from society, which will derive in better work conditions, growth opportunities, and economic return. But without any doubt the most important reason is the safety of the patients. Becoming a CMI or CHI is a possibility today for candidates compliant with specific requirements, who are also able to demonstrate mastery of fundamental medical interpreting concepts and skills via the certification examinations. Comprehensive yet efficient preparation for the certification examinations implies more than just memorizing concepts and terms; it involves practice, feedback and a change in the mind set of the applicant to navigate with ease and confidence the testing process and format. During this workshop, participants will be provided with tips, strategies and lessons on the medical interpreting fundamental concepts and skills relevant for test takers. Likewise, interpreters will be guided through a series of practical exercises to help them identify strengths and weaknesses while performing sight translation and consecutive interpreting.
