Hittites • Capital in Anatolia • Horse-drawn chariots • Access to copper, silver, and iron deposits • New tools and weapons of iron = strong military and economy • Unknown invaders destroyed the Hittite kingdom During the second millennium B.C.E. Mesopotamian political and cultural concepts spread across much of western Asia.

  4. Assyrian Empire 911-612 B.C.E. • First to rule over far-flung lands and diverse peoples • Gained control of major trade routes • Superior military and technology • Iron weapons • Compound bows • Terror tactics

Israelites 2000-500 B.C.E. • King Saul, first king • King David –strong monarchy • King Solomon – Israel powerful • Extensive trade, large bureaucracy, chariot army • Built First Temple in Jerusalem • Temple priest became powerful = gap between rich and poor • Women respected and relative equality – declined as time went on

  6. After Solomon’s death, Israel split: Israel and Judah • United to fight Assyrian Empire BUT in 721 B.C.E. Assyrians conquered Israel and deported Israelites • Caused Diaspora – dispersion or scattering of Jews since no independent Israel

  7. Jewish community lived by rigid set of rules = isolated from other peoples • Powerful sense of community • Believed they were protected by Yewah

Pick ANY term/word/concept from Unit 1 and create a non linguistic (NO written out definitions) representation of that word
