  3. THE SKELETAL SYSTEM • FIVE FUNCTIONS • Supports the body • Protects main organs • Movement and anchorage of muscles • Mineral storage • Hemopoiesis

  4. Joints • Joints- where two bones come together

  5. Ligaments • Ligaments • Holds the joint together • Strong non-elastic bands of dense tissue provides stability and limits joint to specific ROM

  6. Muscular System • Muscles • Responsible for movement • Able to contract (shorten) and relax (lengthen) • Muscle motion in a joint is caused by muscle contraction and gravity • Muscle must have a nerve and blood supply • Nerve- responsible for stimulating the muscle to contract • Blood- brings nourishment and oxygen and carries away waste
