  2. Outcomes • General Outcome: To help pupils improve in their English-speaking skills. • Specific Outcome: To make pupils aware of the need to articulate the final /s/, /z/, /t/ and /d/ consonants of grammatical and lexical words.

  3. Strategies for teachers

  4. Department-wide strategy English Fiesta Month. Theme: Be Heard, Speak Right. Throughout the month, • P5 teachers will take turns to read a short story/poem before Assembly every Monday & Friday. The teachers would ensure that he/she demonstrates proper pronunciation and enunciation of grammatical and lexical words. • Recess-Activity: Public-speaking : Pupils will be given the opportunity to speak at the podium during recess every Tuesday & Thursday. They will have to choose from a list of topics that have been prepared by the English Department. • Inter-class competition:In the last week, the best group from each class, will act out their role-play during Assembly (a spin-off from the role-plays conducted in class, which will be mentioned in slide 6.)

  5. 1. School-wide strategy (Recommendation to principal) Pupils to attend a 5 weeks Phonetics Course conducted by external vendors after school hours. (3 times a week x 2 hours) • At the start of the course, pupils will individually use Audacity to record themselves reading a passage that has been prepared by the ELL department. They will listen to their audio recording and reflect on their pronunciation of grammatical and lexical words. • At the end of the course, pupils will again record themselves reading the same passage. They will upload the recordings on a class blog. Their classmates will comment on the recordings, based on what they have learnt during the Phonetics Course.

School- wide strategy • School-wide strategy:Pupils to attend a 5 weeks Phonetics Course conducted by external vendors after school hours.(3 times a week x 2 hours) • At the end of the 5 weeks, in groups, pupils will carry out a role-play based on a script prepared by the English Department. They will be assessed based on a rubric, with the focus being on proper pronunciation and enunciation. The best group will participate in an inter-class competition during assembly (as mentioned in slide 4). • Individually, pupils will sit for their Oral Exam.

  7. How strategy relates to Cognitivism • Pupils are explicitly taught the rules of the plural and past tense forms. • Pupils are able to develop knowledge through analysis of the different words (public speaking, pronouncing words on flash cards) • The use of IT, discussion, role play and the other assessments modes ensure that the pupils are actively engaged throughout the process.
