  3. Objectives: • Describe the structure of nerve bundles • Identify the cranial nerves by number and by name, and list the major functions of each • Name the 4 major nerve plexuses and describe their distribution

  4. Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) • Bundles of neurons form nerves similar in structure to muscles • Endoneurium- wrap around individual neurons • Perineurium- wrap around fiber bundles • Epineurium- cover entire outside of multiple bundles

  5. Cranial Nerves • 12 Pairs that serve head and neck regions • Numbered in order • Names reveal structures they control Know the number, name, and major function of these for test! Table 7.1

Spinal Nerves • 31 pairs of spinal nerves are formed by ventral and dorsal roots of spinal cord • Named for region of cord that they arise • Dorsal rami- serve posterior skin and muscles • Ventral rami- • T1-T12 form intercostal nerves, serve anterior and lateral trunk • All other ventral rami form nerve plexuses in limbs

  12. Critical Thinking: How To Increase Digestion? • Would it be better to do activities after eating a meal, or rest after eating a meal to improve digestion? Why?

  17. Answer: The Reticular Formation • Involved in motor control of visceral organs • Reticular activating system plays a role in awake/sleep cycles and consciousness

  18. Critical Thinking • Why is the limbic system referred to as the “reptilian” part of the brain?

  19. Answer • Controls “drives” and emotion (known as limbic system) • Thirst, appetite, sex, pain, and pleasure centers
