  8. Selection • Muscling- long, level, square rump, wide at the stifle • Structural Correctness- correct bone structure, no leg/walking problems, etc • Style and Balance- appealing to the eye, straight legs, trim middle, etc • Growth Potential- the animal has not topped out the growth curve

  15. Protecting the Investment • Farm Bureau will provide insurance to Farm Bureau members • Insurance Premium is reasonable • Contact the Marion County Farm Bureau office for more information

  16. Facilities • Warm, dry, well ventilated area. • Clean Feeder and Water Trough. • Fencing should be secure, strong and 5’ in height • Secure exercise areas are necessary to halter break

Nutrition • Polygastric – four compartment stomach • Steers will consume large quantities of feed and hay • Feed concentrated ration • Grower (Beginning of project) • Finisher • Weigh steer often • Weigh Tape is a good estimate • Adjust feed as needed • Fresh clean water (drink over 20 gallons a day) • Not sure—ASK your 4-H Leader or FFA Advisor

  18. FEED • Should be labeled for cattle. • Good show ration 12% or higher in protein. • General rule. • “Garbage in, Garbage out.” • Cheap feed will under perform. • Do your homework- compare, ask questions. • Keep consistent in type of feed and times of feeding
