  1. Grace Revealed in the Person of Jesus Maricamp church of Christ Adult Class – June – July 2009 By Bobby Deason

  2. I. IntroductionA. The Revelation of God’s Grace Plan Announced to Shepherds, Luke 2:8-20. 1. 10 “But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

  3. Grace Revealed in the Person of Jesus. 2. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:14, 16-17)

  4. Grace Revealed in the Person of Jesus, Cont’d. 3. The Mystery has been REVEALED. “This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. 7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's gracegiven me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. (Ephesians 3:6-9)

  5. The Reason The Mystery was Revealed in Jesus. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence, (Ephesians 3:10-12).

  6. Grace Revealed in the Person of Jesus Cont’d. 3. For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope-- the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good, (Titus 2:11-14).

  7. Jesus’ Death is God’s Grace Gift to All Mankind – You and Me! 4. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone, Hebrews 2:9.

  8. “WHO IS THIS JESUS FROM NAZARETH,” The People Asked? II. OUTLINE A. Jesus is God’s Grace Plan who was hidden until the fullness of times. In Him the mystery has now been revealed. All Eyes Are On Jesus!!! Who Is This Child? Who is this Man? Who is this Miracle Worker from Nazareth? WHO ARE YOU JESUS?

  9. Who Are You Jesus?Romans 1:1-6. 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 6 And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

  10. Mark 6:2-3 • 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! • 3 Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

  11. Victory is Promised in Jesus B. Now the angels know who the promised Savior is and Satan knows for sure who it is that will “bruise his head.” The battle rages on. The tempter is looking for an opportunity to get rid of the gracious Jesus. 1. The Cross will not be the victor – death will not conquer our Lord Jesus. Death will be Jesus’ birth canal to resurrection life. 2. The early church was assured of victory in Jesus and so are we . “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you” (Rom. 16:20).

  12. “The Whole Creation has been Groaning up to the Present Time” 3. Jesus is the one that all creation has been waiting for. He is the one who will redeem and liberate the creation and all mankind who believe in Him. Read with me: Romans 8:18-25.

  13. Romans 8:18-25 • 18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. • 19 The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. • 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope

  14. Romans 8:18-25, Cont’d • 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. • 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. • 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

  15. Romans 8:18-25, Cont’d • 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? • 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

  16. A Response Must Be Made to the Gift 4. The Redemptive Grace of God Has Now Been Revealed in the Person of Jesus Christ the Lord. We must respond to God’s gift of grace, by faith, repentance and a new birth, John 3:3-5; Acts 2:22-41. 5. Jesus offers to make a Covenant with us Individually.

  17. C. The Gospel is the Good News about God’s Grace Revealed In Jesus Christ. 1. Our pioneer preachers had a way of saying that the gospel consists of:   a.  Three facts to be believed — the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. b. Three commands to be obeyed — faith, repentance, baptism. c. Three promises to be enjoyed — Forgiveness of Sins, the Gift of the Holy Spirit and Eternal Life. d. I don’t think they or we have given proper place to the grace of God. So let’s make it clear that the facts, the commands and the promises of the gospel are all by grace.

  18. The Adequate Gift of GRACE • Called by grace – 2 Tim. 1:9; 2 Thess. 2:14-17. • Believe by grace – Acts 18:27 • Repent by grace – Acts 11:18; 2 Tim. 2:24-25 • Obedience by grace – Rom. 1:5; Tit. 3:4-7 • Saved by grace – Eph. 2:8-9 • Instructed by grace – Tit. 2:11-14 • Work by grace – I Cor. 15:10; Eph. 2:10; Phil. 2:13 • Rewarded by grace – 2 Thess. 2:13-17

  19. C. The Gospel is the Good News of God’s Grace Revealed In Jesus Christ, Cont’d. 2. Let’s also make it clear what the gospel is. The gospel is not everything in the New Testament, and it is certainly not all the theories and deductions drawn by us. It is rather the good news of God’s saving grace offered through the shed blood of Jesus. It is the declaration that Jesus is risen from the dead. It is the announcement that Jesus is alive forever and is Savior and Lord.

  20. What the Gospel is and Isn’t. 3. It is important that we distinguish between the gospel (kerugma), and the apostles’ teaching, (didache). One is the message of salvation that the crucified Christ is the risen Savior and Lord; the other is instruction in the teaching of the apostles. (See I Cor. 15:1-4; Acts 2:42) 4. As we place more emphasis on grace, let us make clear that while grace and works (to be saved) are incompatible, grace and obedience are not incompatible. Grace, to be enjoyed, calls for a response - obedience.

  21. What the Gospel is and Isn’t, cont’d. • 5. This is why the apostle twice in Romans refers to the “obedience of faith.” Obedience is not a work, but a response to grace. Faith, repent-ance and baptism -- responses to the gospel -- are “acts of grace,” as Alexander Campbell called them. (Eph. 2:8-10)

  22. “IT IS MY DESTINY” D. Our response to the Revealed Savior should be: Jesus Focused, Grace Oriented and Love Motivated as we make our way through this world on our way to our final destination. We have a destiny. We have been created for High and Holy Purposes. Illus: Anna in Bratislava, Slovakia 1992 – I asked her, are you going to be a professional Cellist like your father, Peter? She said….

  23. “It is God who made us for this very Purpose” 4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 We live by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. (2 Cor. 5:4-9).

  30. On What Or Whom Are You Focused? • To what or whom are you looking? “Doctrinal” fixation? “Problems of the church” fixation? “Issues” fixation? “Traditions of men” fixation? “A fixation of a ‘famous’ person”? “A fixation of Self”? • Do you see Him? Are your thoughts and eyes fixed on Him?

  31. My Motto, - A Short Phrase With A Guiding Principle, A Goal - Is To Be: • “Jesus Focused, • Grace Oriented and • Love Motivated”.

  32. Why Grace and Love Are Minimized? • Until Jesus is in focusGRACE will not be understood, appreciated, properly received and administrated. • Only when Jesus is one’s focus will it be possible to LOVE, that is “to love as he loves.” (John 13:34-35)

  33. FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS! • All human problems, within and without the Body of Christ, the Church are due to a blurred and distorted view; • a cock-eyed view, a wrong focus.

  34. WITH JESUS IN FOCUS WE WILL BE: • Firmly rooted in God’s Word in our hearts. • Solidly founded on “God’s righteousness.” • Joyful recipients of His grace. • Desiring to be obedient to His will. • Thankfully humble and grateful. • Gracious, kind, long-suffering and accepting of all fellow-believers. • Non-judgmental, not contentious but forgiving to all.

  35. WE SHALL BE LIKE JESUS, OUR MASTER, CALLS US TO BE: • one who is poor in spirit, • meek, • mourns, • hungering for His righteousness merciful, • pure in heart and • a peace-maker (Matthew 5:1-16)

  36. BEING JESUS FOCUSED… …We Shall Be Like Him, Our Lord and Master, Truly “Salt and Light”… • …Seeing one anotheras Jesus sees us. • …Seeing ourselves as Jesus sees us. • …Being and becomingmore like Jesus.

  37. “JESUS FOCUSED.”Concluding Thoughts • Let Christ remain what He is, namely the center, while various circles surround Him. • “Do not infect that heavenly philosophy of Christ with human decrees. • Do not remove the target from its position.”

  38. “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2)

  39. Thank You JesusWe Love You So Much!
