  2. Starkweather Background • Starkweather grew up in a poor family. • His father was a carpenter but didn’t get enough work to hold down the family consistently because of the arthritis in his hands. • Because of this his mother worked as a waitress

  3. Background (conts.) • Stark weather had a disease which made his legs miss shaped • Was bullied in School • He also had a speech problem • Was bullied in school • Also had myopia (which effects vision) • Was a slow learner • And didn’t like school • After letting out his rage physically he later became a bully himself and got his revenge

  4. Fugate’s part in the killings • Fugate said she came home and saw that Starkweather had shot both her parents • She told him to hide the bodies • Later the two fled doing a cross country crime spree • She claims she was a hostage

  5. First Murder • Starkweather committed his first murder in November 30 1957. • He tried to buy a stuffed animal from a gas station cashier on credit but the cashier wouldn’t let him so after buying a few smaller purchases he cam back with a shotgun and drove the cashier out to field and shot him in the head.

  6. First Spree • January 1 1958 Starkweather shot Fugate’s parents and Fugate and Starkweather hid their bodies behind the house. • Then after fleeing to a family friends house Starkweather shot the friend and his dog and then took off with his car. • After their car got stuck in the some mud the ditched it, then later shot two teenagers trying to give them a ride • Once ditching they bodies they drove to a nearby town and broke into a home and stabbed both a woman and her maid then shot the husband when he came home • They dove off in the family’s car and headed onto the highway. • After authorities being alerted Starkweather ditched the car and shot another man and drove off but before they could get anywhere a sheriff caught them. • Fugate surrenderd with out a fight but Starkweather was speeding off. • He stop after the sheriff shot the car window and glass flew in to Stark weather's neck

Lauer Ward (47), wealthy industrialist • 9.Clara Ward (46), C. Lauer Ward's wife • 10.Lillian Fencl (51), Clara Ward's maid • 11.Merle Collison (37), traveling salesman

  8. Trial & Execution • Starkweather was sentenced to death by electric chair • Fugate was given a life sentence • But Fugate got out on parole and married • She refuse to talk about the murdering spree
