The Center for Embedded Systems (CES) was established in March 2009 by the National Science Foundation as an Industry/University partnership dedicated to developing a globally recognized center for embedded computing system technologies.   4. Areas of Expertise Many of the world’s top companies supplement their own R&D efforts by participating in NSF I/UCRC organizations. The Center for Embedded Systems specializes in research in the following areas: • Power, Energy and Thermal-Aware Design • Low power circuit architectures and design tools • Dynamic performance, power, energy and thermal management for multicore embedded systems • Statistical variation aware design of digital systems • Energy efficient architectures and code optimization for embedded systems • Electronic System-level (ESL) Design and Technologies • Modeling and simulation • Hardware/software co-design and optimization • Trusted, reliable, and secure design

Areas of Expertise • Embedded Multicore Architectures and Programming • Network-on-Chip design and optimization • Compilation of stream applications on multicore processors • Highly power-efficient programmable accelerators • Soft error resilient system design • Design and programming of low power embedded systems • Embedded GPU computing • Temperature- and variations-aware architectures and programming • Embedded Software Systems • Real-time scheduling • Embedded systems for smart grids • Middleware and VM for embedded systems • Embedded software instrumentation and tools • Cyber-Physical Systems • Modeling and simulation • Model based formal verification and semi-formal testing • Model based synthesis from high-level specifications

IUCRC Operation Project Proposals • Typical duration: 1 or 2 years Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) & Project Funding • Member companies either through SIUC or ASU • Each member company is represented at the IAB • Membership fees are used to fund projects • IAB recommends proposals in late May (@ SIUC site) • Site director initiates projects in June • Projects start in August • IAB & NSF reviews projects in January (@ASU site)
