  2. Why dowriters write? • Writers write for specific reasons, not just by chance. What are some possible reasons an individual would choose to publish something? • ???

  3. What elements do writers consider when writing their manuscripts? • ???

  4. All writers are aware of four elements when they write: • Audience • Purpose • Tone • Voice

  5. What is “audience”? • The people who are expected to gain the most or be the most responsive to the material. • What are some different types of “audiences”? • ????

  6. What is meant by “purpose”? • The author’s reason for writing the material in the first place. The writing becomes a way for the author to express his views, beliefs, values, interests, experiences. • Writing can do one or more of the following: • Inform • Persuade • Entertain

  7. What is meant by “tone”? • Tone is the feeling or mood that the writer conveys through his wording. • What are some examples of tone? • ???

What is meant by “voice”? • Voice is one of the most compelling characteristics of good writing. “Voice” for a writer can be as distinctive as the actual “voice” of a well-known singer. • Voice is revealed through the distinctive wording and phrasing of the writer. • Great writers have distinctive “voices.” • Can you name some writers with well-known “voices”?

  9. “Universal Themes” and “the Human Condition” • Writers convey their messages through the use of “universal” themes to say something about the “human condition.” • Characters within all writings experience love, hatred, anger, adversity, triumph, defeat, or all types of conflict. These emotions and conflicts are typical aspects of being human.

  10. Types of Conflict: • Man vs. Man • Man vs. Himself • Man vs. Nature • Man vs. Society

  11. Recurrent Themes or “messages”: • Most well-written materials contain more than “one” theme. Most contain “recurrent” themes, meaning that there are several themes that run concurrently through the work. • “Recurrent” themes show up in different parts of the reading, often repeating a central message that the writer is trying to reveal. • What are some themes (messages) found in Sherman Alexie’sReservation Blues?
