  3. PURPOSE OF VOLUNTEERS IN SCHOOLS Activities shall support and enrich the lives of school children and stimulate an interested community to more active support of public education.

Volunteer Program goals • Recruit volunteers • Provide opportunities for volunteers to share their talents and skills • Provide opportunities for meaningful service • Provide help for students • Assist teachers with non-instructional tasks • Establish a school-community partnership for quality education

  5. Volunteer Guidelines • Complete an online volunteer application and attach a US government issued Id • Application will under go a background check • Applicants will be notified via email or by the campus volunteer coordinator by phone • Once approved, volunteers may go to Public Relations to obtain their ID badge • Volunteers MUST wear ID badges while on YISD campuses or school functions

  6. VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES CONTINUE • Volunteers must work under the direction of the principal or volunteer coordinator • All volunteers must be provided with an orientation by the volunteer coordinator or principal’s designee

  7. Volunteers must… • communicate with the volunteer coordinator or assistant coordinator to assure expectations and task assignments are being followed • adhere to the Volunteer Code of Ethics • follow the volunteer guidelines • follow campus policies and procedures

  8. Volunteers shall not… • attempt to discipline nor punish a student • communicate with students in any way unless specifically advised or directed by a school official • perform substitute teacher duties

  9. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES • Help in special events • Participate in district or school committees, PTA, PTO, etc. • Monitor the playground or cafeteria • Assist in the office • Help in the work/parent room • Chaperoning field trips • Cross guard • Tutors • Mentors • Serve as computer tutors

  10. VOLUNTEER CODE OF ETHICS • Respect • Responsible • Attitude • Confidentiality • Appearance

  11. RESPECT • A volunteer shall be respectful and courteous to one another, students, administration, school staff and the community.

  12. RESPONSIBLE • A Volunteer shall be responsible for his/her scheduled times and must notify the volunteer coordinator/school staff if not able to meet his/her commitment.

  13. ATTITUDE • Volunteers shall come to school with a good attitude, do not let personal feelings affect work as a volunteer.

  14. Confidentiality • A Volunteer shall not discuss information you may hear, see or otherwise acquire while at the school concerning students or others.

  15. Appearance • A Volunteer shall dress appropriately, always remembering that he/she is setting an example for all students.

  16. VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide information to volunteers • Provide orientation • Meetings • Maintain volunteer documentation • Sign in sheets & reports • Assign & organize assignments • Recruit & retain

PRINCIPAL’S RESPONSIBILITY • Select the campus volunteer coordinator • Assess the campus volunteer program needs • Provide support for the volunteer program • Determine guidelines for campus volunteers • Principal and district parental involvement coordinator have the authority to dismiss a volunteer who fails to follow guidelines, code of ethics, campus and district regulations • Principal is in charge of their campus volunteer program, therefore needs to address any concerns or issues happening at the campus

  18. If volunteer privileges are revoked at a school, this applies to any other school, district facility or function • A suspended volunteer may reapply the following school year

DISTRICT RESPONSIBLITY • Regulate and ensure student safety • Provide all campuses with the volunteer handbook • Provide training and orientation to all campus volunteer coordinators • Maintain regular communication with principals, coordinators and staff • Provide assistance and assure volunteer program regulations are followed

  20. PTA, PTO AND BOOSTER CLUBS • All PTA, PTO and booster clubs MUST register as volunteers • All fund raising activities/contributions must receive prior approval from the principal and Area Associate Superintendent (GE-R – district regulation) • For booster club guidelines go to www.yisd.net under Accounting Department
