  2. Definitions • Pluralism • condition of a society in which numerous distinct ethnic, religious, or cultural groups co-exist within one nation • Race • group of people having genetically transmitted characteristics • Multiracial • more than one race

  3. Definitions • Ethnicity • socially transmitted • membership in a group sharing a common ancestral heritage • Minority • smaller or fewer in number • Global Village • Technological Interaction – More reason to understand cultures and customs

  4. What does ethnicity really mean in terms of your programming? • With respect to working with an ethnicity you are unfamiliar with: • Don’t impose your beliefs, find someone to inform you. • Be aware of individuals in your program who may have come from different backgrounds. • Their experience might impact their approach to your program. • Try to bring diversity to your programs, a diverse program often helps most participants yield more.

  5. Definitions • Culture • pattern of beliefs, values, and behaviors that is socially transmitted from generation to generation through the spoken and written word, the use of certain objects, customs and traditions • learned behavior

Entering a new culture • Acculturation • process by which individuals absorb, learn, acquire, and integrate the overt and covert cultural characteristics of the host culture • assimilation • Accommodation • groups accept what fits comfortably or meets a need, while resisting aspects of the culture that cause discomfort

  7. Definitions • Diversity • difference; variety • Cultural diversity • differences among cultures • how differences must be viewed if understanding is to be accomplished • Stigma • an attitude by others that the individual is marked, tainted, or discounted

Family dynamics… • We have more children from single parent families than ever before. • The number of same sex families is on the rise and it is estimated that 10% of the population are part of the Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual (GLBT) community. • The number of second and third marriages is on the rise meaning that the dynamics of step parents/siblings and half siblings adds dynamics.

  9. So what? • Know your biases • Know your participants • Know your community • Examine your language • families (what is a family?) • home (where is home?)

  10. Questions • What do you do when your rules infringe on another person’s beliefs? • What is the “melting pot” analogy? • What is the “salad bowl” or “mosaic” analogy?
