  2. Literal Vs. Contextual Literalist: People who read and interpret the Bible passages word for word based on the actual words in their ordinary meaning Contextualist: People who weave together the whole situation, background or environment relevant to a particular event, personality, etc. when reading the Bible

  3. Example Dear Diary, We all went to the basketball game the other night. There must have been at least a million people there! We just hammered the other team. Afterward, we stopped at out local hangout, and I must have eaten at least three hot dogs. I was starving to death. The trouble is, we got home awfully late. Jerry was driving, and he would have to get a flat on the way home. That old clunker he drives always seems to act up at all the wrong times. We had to walk about 40 miles to the nearest phone so his dad could come pick us up. On top of that, it was raining cats and dogs. By the time I got home, I was about 2 hours late. Dad hit the ceiling, and mom almost had a cow. I managed to stay pretty cool about it, and I didn’t put my foot in my mouth like I usually do. Well, I’d better tackle my paper for history now. So far, it’s a bunch of garbage and if I don’t fix it by tomorrow Mr. Tramble will wring my neck for turning in a mess again.

  4. Kinds of Truth Found in Scripture Scientific Truth:Observations regarding the universe we live in Eg. The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hurries to the place where it rises (Eccl 1:5) Historical Truth: Records and stories of past events and deeds Eg. And in the 9th year of his reign, in the 10th month, on the 10th day of the month, King Nebuchadnezzer of Babylon came with his armies against Jerusalem (2 Kings 25:1)

  5. Kinds of Truth Found in Scripture Moral Truth: Lessons and rules about good behaviour Eg. You shall not hate in your heart any one of your kin…but you shall love your neighbour as yourself (Lev 19:17-18) Proverbial Truth: Short saying of common sense wisdom Eg. Those who honour their father will have joy in their own children (Sir 3:5)

  6. Kinds of Truth Found in Scripture Symbolic Truth: Poetic language used to emphasize a lesson Eg. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell (Mt 5:29) Religious Truth: Belief and faith in God’s action in our life Eg. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life (Jn 3:16)

  7. Genesis: First Book of Our Faith Genesis means “beginning” Genesis is like a 3 act play: • Creation – God creates (1-2) • De-Creation – Sin destroys (3-11) • Re-Creation God saves us (12-50) • Act 1 and 2 deals with prehistory (origin of the world) • Act 3 introduces Abram (Abraham)

  8. Genesis: First Book of Our Faith Stories were created separately, over a period of at least 1000 years, and passed by word of mouth The stories of prehistory, such as Adam and Eve, are good examples of myths Two Creation Stories in Genesis • All Creation • Where did sin come from?

  9. Genesis Vs. Theory of Evolution From a scientific point of view, these stories are at best a summary of the natural universe that has been largely proven false. But we are not reading stories looking for scientific facts. These stories are essential for the religious truth they reveal.
