  2. Warm-up 8/27/2012: Adding and Subtracting Integers • Sometimes mathematicians are not interested in actual numbers, but simply whether or not a number is positive. A good example is the stockholder who is a concerned only with whether the value of his or her stocks go up. • Problem: Describe each situation below as positive, negative, zero or cannot be determined. • The sum of two positive integers. • The difference of two positive numbers • The sum of a number and its opposite • The sum of a negative number and zero • The difference of two negative numbers Math Starters 5-29, page 197

  5. Warm – up 8/28/2012:Solving Two-Step Equations • Two – step equations are equations that must be solved by using two transformations. If each side of an equation is in simplest form, then the following steps should be followed: • Add or subtract the same number to each side of the equation. • Multiply or divide each side of the equation by the same non-zero number. Problem: Of the four problems listed below, which have the same solution? • 3a+ 4 = -2 • 2a+14 = 0 • 11 = 7 – 2a • -3a+18 = 39 Math Starters 5-50, page 205

  6. Warm – up 8/29/2012: The Muddiest point • On a post-it, students will individually identify their muddiest point (any standard or concept he or she did not understand) of the Cara’s Candles and The Yo-Yo Problem.

After school, she goes home to get money, but she realizes her little brother took her $20 bill and left her only $5. Mya angrily walks to the store and checks the prices of the snacks. The Hot Fries cost $1.95; the Snickers costs $2.50; and the Fanta costs $1.50. When she gets to the register, the cashier tells her the Hot Fries are on promotion for 50% off before tax, and the tax is 7%. Can Mya buy all of these snacks?
