  2. What is Plot? • Plot is the pattern of events that make up a story. • All fiction works follow the same plot sequence.

  3. PLOT SEQUENCE • EXPOSITION • COMPLICATIONS • CLIMAX • RESOLUTION

  4. PLOT DIAGRAM 3 2 1 4 In order to analyze literature, you should memorize the plot sequence and what ingredients go into each step.

  5. 1. EXPOSITION The characters, setting, and conflict are introduced.

  6. 2. COMPLICATIONS The conflict begins to get more complicated and interesting.

  7. 3. CLIMAX This is the highest point of interest. It occurs as a result of a decision that the main character makes (an “Aha!”) or an event which changes the conflict.

  8. 4. RESOLUTION • Loose ends are tied up since the problem is resolved. Predict how life will be different as a result of the resolved problems!

  10. OVERVIEW Made up stories (fiction) always follow the predictable pattern of a plot. Exposition: characters, setting, conflict Complications: conflict continues to worsen Climax: character attacks conflict because of event/decision Resolution: problem is resolved and story ends
